Towson Police Investigating Cell Phone That May Have Recorded Locker Room

Towson University police are investigating a cell phone found in a locker room, a phone that may have recorded members of the women’s swimming & diving team.

The Baltimore Sun reports that members of the women’s swimming & diving team found the smartphone inside the locker room on Friday.

The Sun notes that Towson’s statement said the phone “may have captured video images and audio recordings of the student-athletes from inside the locker room,” but a parent of one of the team members said the athlete viewed an 8-minute video on the phone when it was found.

The same parent said the team met with athletic director Tim Leonard on Friday to discuss the issue, and that a “personnel action” had been taken by the school. The school did not confirm or deny that claim, though, declining to discuss the personnel matter as the investigation was still ongoing.

This is the second similar situation Towson has had to deal with in the past year. A former teacher at the University named Barry Freundel was sentence to 17 years in prison earlier this year, the Sun reports. Freundel admitted that he had recorded women in a Washington Jewish ritual bath. Freundel had taught at Towson since 2009, but has now resigned from that post.

As a former D1 University swimmer (not at Towson**) this is sad. People need to stop making accusations and let the investigation take its course. These swimmers are probably in a compromised state of mind because they invest a lot of time and energy into these coaches. Please stop bashing them if you do not know the situation or are not directly involved. People are saying hurtful things that take away from the team. I am sure they just want to move on a focus on the rest of their season. It is hard enough being a student-athlete, they do not need all these hateful comments.

Why hasn’t anything been done about this? Coaches are still on deck coaching. The athletic department is dismissing the concerns of the swimmers and not protecting them. This is absurd. Business as usual?

I feel the same way. Our daughter is a diver and flying home this weekend. No coach on deck for the divers with experience coaching diving. 9 freshman divers! It looks like safety is not a priority in the locker room or on the diving boards.

I believe that Towson is already preparing for getting an experienced coach on deck for the divers. Unfortunate incident – feel bad for the divers and the recruits that are affected. Hope Interim coach is hired sooner than later.

Are you a swimmer at Towson or just someone with knowledge of the situation?

I have friends on the team and I was an alumni of the team…I do not believe that the recordings were purposeful however, it happened and I know many members of the swim team are very upset and hurt by this and just want to move on and continue their season. This is a distraction that they don’t need.
