Aaron Workman, who is part of what seems to be nearly a full-staff turnover at Penn State, has been hired by North Carolina as their new assistant coach, the school announced today.
“I am extremely excited to join the staff at UNC. I am looking forward to working with Coach DeSelm as well as Mike (Litzinger), Abel (Sánchez), and Christie (Garth),” says Workman. “I grew up near this area and I am looking forward to having my family move back here.”
Workman spent three years at Penn State, Pitt, UNLV, Wittenburg, and Hollins University (working backward from most recent to oldest positions) prior to coming to the Tar Heels. He swam collegiately at Kentucky where he was a four-time All-American.
“Aaron will primarily focus his coaching duties on our speed-oriented swimmers,” head coach Rich DeSelm said of his new hire, “but he will be fully involved with all swimmers and all aspects of the program. We welcome Aaron, his wife Jaime, and his children Molly and Macon to UNC.”
Workman originally hails from Dublin, Virginia, which is about a three hour drive across the state line from Chapel Hill (near Blacksburg). He was a sprinter himself at Kentucky.
Another former Penn State assistant, Aaron Mahaney, took a job at Buffalo earlier this summer.
