Yellow Jackets on a Roll – Keep Another Georgia Star In-State

Kira DeBruyn has verbally committed to swim for Georgia Institute of Technology beginning in 2014.

The Marietta GA native is a two-time state champion in the 200 IM (she won in both 2012 and 2013 with the exact same time – 2:04.22). In the 2013 state meet DeBruyn’s victory was hard-fought: she was fourth after the fly, third after the back, still third after the breast, and with a free split nearly a second faster than anyone else in the heat, she snatched the gold with a 0.14 margin.

However, like a true IMer DeBruyn is versatile and could fill several slots. Her back, breast and fly are each strong; all the more so in the 200s than the 100s. Not surprisingly, then, her strongest event is the 400 IM.

In long course season with Chattahoochee Gold Swim Club, DeBruyn was 8 seconds faster in the 400m IM this summer than she was in 2012. Her 4:57 from the Georgia Long Course Championships made the Winter Nationals time standard. Her best short course time of 4:18 in the same event is also a Winter Nationals cut. A swim like that would have put her in the A-final at ACC Championships and immediately catapulted her into second place on the Top Ten board at Georgia Tech.
