The academic honors keep rolling in for the University of Wyoming swimming and diving teams. The College Swimming Coaches Association of America released it Scholar All-America honors Wednesday.
UW had 10 swimmers and divers earn Honorable Mention Scholar All-America accolades with senior Jordan Turner leading the way earning the award for the third time in his career.
“I’m so proud of this group and this may be one of the hardest thing to do to have an NCAA “B” cut and a GPA over a 3.50,” head coach Tom Johnson said. “It is an absolute commitment to academics to earn this honor and I couldn’t be happier.”
Turner, a native of Marietta, Ga., earned his third Honorable Mention Scholar All-America honor. He recorded a 3.53 GPA in astronomy. He had a strong season in the pool earning All-Western Athletic Conference honors in the 400 individual medley.
Junior Ryan Nelson, a native of Huntington Beach, Calf., earned his second Honorable Mention Scholar All-America honor after posting a perfect 4.00 GPA in physiology. He earned All-WAC in the 500 and 1,560 freestyles and the 400 individual medley.
Junior Kyle Scalise, hailing from Sparks, Nev., was named Honorable Mention Scholar All-America for the first time in his career. He sported a GPA of 3.73 in petroleum engineering. Scalise was a key part of the Cowboys success in the pool earning All-WAC honors in the 100 breaststroke and 200 individual medley.
Freshman Wade Nelson, brother of junior Ryan Nelson also earned the prestigious honor for the first time in his career. He turned in a spring GPA of 3.57 in physiology. He earned All-WAC honors in the 200 and 400 individual medley and the 200 butterfly.
Sophomore Abby Sullivan, a native of Olympia, Wash., recorded a GPA of 3.92 in criminal justice to earn her second Honorable Mention Scholar All-America honor. She earned All-MW honors in the 200 backstroke.
Junior Kari Campbell, from Laramie, posted a GPA of 3.77 in communications to earn her first Honorable Mention Scholar All-America honor. She was a solid contributor for the Cowgirls qualifying for the NCAAA Zone “E” Diving Championship and earning All-MW on the platform dive.
Senior Jordan Denny, who hails from Billings, Mont., picked up her first Honorable Mention Scholar All-America award with a 3.54 GPA in communication. Denny finished her decorated career in the pool by earning All-MW honors in the 100 backstroke and 400 medley relay.
Junior Emily Ridout, a native of Dunstable, England, a psychology major earned her first Honorable Mention Scholar All-America honor posting a GPA of 3.54 in psychology. She had a breakout season in the pool earning All-MW honors in the 100 breaststroke and 400 medley relay.
Freshman Connor Tarver, another Wyoming native from Jackson, Wyo., earned Honorable Mention Scholar All-America by posting a 3.73 GPA in chemistry. She finished her freshman campaign strong earning All-MW honors in the 200 backstroke.
The Scholar All-America award is presented to college and university swimmers and divers who have achieved a cumulative, or term grade point average of 3.5 or higher for the academic term coinciding with their respective NCAA/NAIA/NJCAA/CCCAA Swimming and Diving Championships and have qualified for and competed at the Championship.
The Honorable Mention Scholar All-America Award is presented to college and university swimmers and divers who have achieved a grade point average of 3.5 or higher for the semester, or cumulative average, and have achieved a “B” time standard but did not qualify or compete in their respective national championship. Divers qualify by competing at their respective championship qualifying meets, zones or NCAA preliminary rounds.
