Olympic champion and current world record holder in the 50 freestyle Cesar Cielo joined SwimSwam to preview the men’s sprint events heading into the 2024 Olympic Games. Cielo dissects the difference that has sprouted in recent years between the 50 and 100 freestyles while hoping to see historic times in both. The Brazilian native will be in Paris for the opening ceremonies of the Games and then travel to Rio to help the Brazilian broadcast team for the entirety of their Olympic coverage.

Exactly why I would love to hear his thoughts. You’d think the lol at the end would’ve given away the very tongue in cheek nature of the statement.
everybody hating on Cielo for the suits but everyone had them. what pisses me off is that this guy failed 2 drug tests and still kept his WR that he went at a very suspicious small domestic competition in a garbage pool with no competition. No other WR that I can think of was set under such questionable circumstances, idk how the hell 20.91 got ratified and stayed on the books. It was so unbelievably obvious that he was on PEDs and yet it still counts.
I would say give the WR back to Bousquet but he failed a drug test in 2010 as well. If you ask me, World Records set at domestic competition should never count. … Read more »

Let’s take away Ledecky’s 1500m record too then, it’s obviously illegitimate that it was set at a small domestic meet, and I”ve just decided I don’t like her which matters way more than the rules.

The hatred towards certain swimmers here is disgusting to see and just a lack of knowledge. Everything held in America or Europe is perfect but a national meet in Brazil is shady or garbage. Pathetic.
Can Coleman talk to Paul Biedermann about the 200 and 400 free?
I don’t understand why so many people have an issue with Biedermann. He has 2 WRs. He wore suits that everyone else had the same opportunity to wear. He did nothing wrong and he is ridiculed constantly. Everyone got faster with the suits from 2008-2009. He got just got a lot faster. Not his fault.
I hope his WRs continue to live on.
I agree completely, people I think just hate on him to be cool I’d bet chlorinetherapy is a casual who picked up on hints that beiferman was hated on through the comments and decided to do so himself to get likes . Long live 1:42.00 and 3:40.07
Wrong on many points. Firstly I’m not a casual, secondly I’m a female, but most importantly I am genuinely curious about hearing from him and seeing the human behind the frequent heated comments about his WRs.

Cielo was a world champion in textile, and had the 50 free textile record from 2013-2015. His records lasted because of the suit but he was still at the top of the field in his day without it.
When Biedermann broke Thorpe and Phelps’ WRs he instantly became the poster boy for the suit era.
Bowman said we need to get rid of these suits “does a boy from Baltimore want to break Paul Biedermann’s WRs?”
Weirdly, the longer he’s held these WRs, the more I appreciate the 200free record. It’s just so much faster than we thought was possible at the time, and even now. And I appreciate that it’ll probably take the great athletic performance in swimming from the last decade in order to do it.
So well said. The 1:42 Biedermann went was ahead of its time even with those suits. I firmly believe he was in 1:43 low shape at the minimum when he went that time. The reason that he could not reach the same point again could be down to a variety of reasons, many swimmers have 1 perfect meet and then cant reach the same point again. It is the fact that he broke Thorpe’s and mainly Phelps’ WR and the criticism he got from MP and Bowman that has made him hated. I cant see why people cant see past this and just appreciate the swim for what it was, one of the best ever.
Lets hope that McEvoy wins this.

Idk how but I guess I mostly forgot that Dressel is the only strong “medal contender” of the last few years with overlap in the 50/100. (And now he’s not even swimming the 100 individually, wah.*) Quickly looking at it, Liendo in 2022 and Alexy/Crooks in 2023 were the only guys to even final in a 50/100 free at WCs / Tokyo since 2017. (Tho I guess Alexy did medal, lol. But clearly ain’t gonna in Paris, womp.)

Given his track record of getting better as the meet goes on, and how he really doesn’t need to be dialed in until day 7, I’d say I’d be surprised if he beats his trials time if he even led off the 4×1
I’d think the coaches would want to lead w Alexy or Giuliano so that one of them has experience swimming against Pan, Grousset, Liendo and possibly Richards

Not leading Dressel off wouldn’t be AS bad a move as using him as the anchor on the mixed medley, but it’d be close.
Dressel usually does improve as the meet goes along, but his lead offs also are usually faster than his trials times. Wouldn’t be surprised if he went down to
47.3 or 47.4
That seems about right like three years ago he went 47.3 at trials and goes 47.2 on his first swims of the meet at Tokyo in 4×100 free and he usually improves even on his first swims .
I’m sure the coaches would lead off with the greatest flat start in swimming history. Would be crazy to do anything else.
Grousset did medal in the 50 and the 100 in (2022, 2023). He flies under the radar and so far has always been on in the biggest meets

Percentage wise, the difference in a supersuit in a 50 vs, say, a 200 is a lot smaller🤷♂️
