Nationally ranked in-state rivals, Purdue and Indiana, squared off today in Bloomington with the home team Hoosiers grabbing the win, 154.5-135.5.
The women of Indiana swam their way to 11 event wins on the day thanks to double event winners Brooklyn Snodgrass, Bronwyn Pasloski, Gia Dalesandro, and Lindsay Vrooman. Vrooman started things off individually with a win in the 200 free (1:48.41) and then touched the wall first again in the 500 free in a time of 4:51.15. Pasloski swept the breaststroke events, winning in times of 1:02.12 and 2:15.70. Following suit, Snodgrass and Dalesandro were able to sweep their respective specialties with Snodgrass taking control of the backstrokes, winning them in times of 53.97 and 1:56.11, and Dalesandro in the 100 and 200 fly in 54.55 and 1:59.59. Dalesandro also added another individual win in the 200 IM.
The group was also a part of Indiana’s winning relay squads; Snodgrass, Dalesandro, and Pasloski opened the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay while Vrooman and Snodgrass, again, closed the meet out on a high note, claiming victory in the 400 free relay.
The Boilermakers were without two of their top performers in Casey Matthews and Rhiannon Sheets but were still able to sweep the freestyle sprints and the boards. Carly Mercer led the way for Purdue, winning both the 50 and 100 freestyle events in 23.07 and 49.96. Mercer extended her total of individual wins for the season to 16 and helped Purdue’s top relays to second place finishes.
The Boilermaker divers added to the team score, winning the two events on the day. Michelle Cabassol bested the 1 meter while MacKenzie Tweardy was able to show her talent on the platform, winning with a score of 300.75.
Francesca Marr was also able to round up some points for the Boilermakers with her second place finishes in the 100 and 200 breaststrokes. Marr’s races were close all day, dropping to second place in the 200 by only .09 and .85 in the 100. Freestyler Allie Davis was also able to secure two runner up performances, touching in a 1:49.35 for the 200 and 4:53.10 in the 500.
The two teams are back in action next weekend, both hosting meets at their home pools. Purdue welcomes in two Big 10 rivals, Minnesota and Wisconsin, on their senior day while the Hoosiers will play host to non-conference foe Louisville.
