Winter Nationals Qualifying Backstroker Lexi Souther Chooses ‘Bama

SwimMAC Carolina’s Lexi Souther has committed to the University of Alabama for next fall. She’s a strong butterfly/backstroke combo sprinter with solid sprint free talent as well. Souther holds a Winter National cut in the 100 back (in both SCY and LCM), and is also a Winter Juniors qualifier in the 200 back and 100 fly.

Souther’s Top Times (SCY/LCM)

  • 50 free – 23.63/27.35
  • 100 back – 54.45/1:04.45
  • 200 back – 2:00.70/2:20.24
  • 100 fly – 55.77/1:03.43

At the North Carolina 1A/2A Champs, Souther won the 100 back representing Parkwood High School.

Alabama had a deep backstroke group last season, and they return all five of their top backstrokers in both 100 and 200 distances this year. Souther would’ve been their #4 200 backstroker and #5 100 backstroker last season with her times now.

She’s improved in all of her events from 2014 to 2015, highlighted by a near 5 second drop in the 200 back in just one season.

Souther would’ve just squeaked into the C final of the 100 back at SECs last year, and another year of training before college might push her into a reliable SEC scorer position when she gets to ‘Bama.

Also committed to the Crimson Tide’s class of 2020 is IL distance freestyler/IMer Alexis Preski.
