USA Swimming Scholastic All-American Emma Sundermeyer has announced her verbal commitment to the University of Alabama, beginning with the 2024-2025 season. Sundermeyer is a junior at the Foundation Academy, located in Windermere, Florida.

Sundermeyer trains and competes year-round with the Southwest Stars Swim Club in Winter Garden, Florida. She primarily swims sprint to mid-distance freestyle, but occasionally throws in other events like the 100 fly or 200 IM.
Sundermeyer has steadily been improving this season across all of her primary events. In November, she set a personal best time in the 100 free by a second (50.72), then dropped two more tenths this month at the Florida Senior Championships to clock a 50.53. At that same meet, she dropped a second and a half in the 200 free to win in 1:47.47 and captured another victory in the 500 free with a best time of 4:53.56.
Prior to the Florida Senior Championships, Sundermeyer also notched two long course best times at the Orlando Speedo Sectionals. She took 2nd in the 100m free with a 57.04, which is a half-second improvement from the summer. In the 200m IM, she dropped two seconds to post a 2:22.06, good for 6th overall.

Alabama recently earned 4th at the SEC Championships and 14th at the NCAA Championships. The 200 freestyle was a weak event for Alabama this year, as they had no individual scorers at the SEC Championships. It took a 1:46.63 to advance to the C-final at SECs this season, putting Sundermeyer less than a second outside that range. With over a year to go before arriving in Tuscaloosa, Sundermeyer has time to continue to improve and potentially get into scoring range before arriving on campus.
Alabama’s top performer in the event this year was Kalia Antoniou, who clocked a 1:45.60 on the lead-off leg of Alabama’s 800 freestyle relay at SECs. Mela Delmenico was the top performer in the individual event, as she earned 36th at conference with a 1:47.81. Delmenico will overlap with Sundermeyer for a year as Alabama begins to build their mid-distance freestyle squad up.
Joining Sundermeyer in Alabama’s class of 2028 is Audrey Cohen, Lexi Stephens, Teia Salvino, Marie Landreneau, and Paige Thome. Also adding to the future 200 freestyle depth is Landreneau and Salvino, who own best times of 1:47.50 and 1:47.65, respectively.
