The College of William and Mary added two swimmers to their fall recruiting class: Mary Motch of Solon Stars Swim Club and Margaret Williams, who swims for Coast Guard Blue Dolphins. Motch is an intriguing prospect. While her 100 times will be competitive in the conference, her 50 times in butterfly, backstroke and freestyle will give the Tribe a lot of options when she joins next fall:
- 50 freestyle: 23.90
- 50 backstroke: 25.31
- 50 butterfly: 25.96
- 100 backstroke: 56.31
- 100 freestyle: 51.67
- 100 butterfly: 56.96
The standout in that list is Motch’s 50 backstroke. Last year William and Mary were CAA champions in the 200 medley relay. Motch’s time would actually be a .6 improvement over their backstroke leg from that winning relay. In fact, it would have been the fastest 50 backstroke in the entire conference last year. Of her individual races, her 100 backstroke is the only one that would have scored at last year’s meet, although her 50/100 freestyle and 100 fly are both knocking on the door.
Motch has made multple finals at the NCSA Junior Nationals on the basis of her 50 prowess. Motch was also a finalist in the 50 and 100 freestyle at the Ohio State Division 2 championships for the Hathaway Brown School.
Williams is the type of swimmer who could find her way into the Tribe lineup in a number of places. She evenly capable across freestyle, fly and backstroke:
- 50 freestyle: 24.77
- 100 freestyle: 52.35
- 200 freestyle: 1:52.54
- 100 butterfly: 58.98
- 100 backstroke: 1:00.60
While none of those swims would have scored at the CAA championship last year, her 100/200 freestyle times put her within striking distance of W&M relays and she should find her way into dual meet lineups with that event set. Williams was a Virginia 4A state champion in the 100 and 200 freestyle for Jamestown High School in 2014.
