Record-setting Wagner College junior Amanda Lucia (East Hampton, MA / East Hampton) has been named the Northeast Conference (NEC) Swimming & Diving Scholar Athlete of the Year, the league announced today.
In the classroom, Lucia carries a 3.49 grade point average as a nursing major who has also been named to the NEC Academic Honor Roll all three years that she has attended Wagner.
Lucia made waves during a stellar junior season that was capped off with her sweeping all three of her individual events while leading the Seahawks to a second-place finish at 2015 NEC Swimming & Diving Championships this past February. The East Hampton native finished first in the 400 IM for the third straight year, with a time of 4:21.62, while setting a school and NEC record in the process. Lucia returned to the blocks minutes later, recording another victory in the 100 Butterfly (55:04).
On the final day of competition, she won the 200 Butterfly, breaking two minutes while setting a school and NEC record with a time of 1:59.34. In addition to topping the previous conference record mark of 2:00.46 set by former Seahawk Jessica Hart in 2009, this was also a qualifying NCAA ‘B’ cut.
In December, the junior qualified and competed at the AT&T Winter National Championships in the above-mentioned events while also copping a pair of NEC Swimmer of the Week honors. In the beginning of the season Lucia set pool records in the 400 IM and 200 Fly, marks that she then managed to break in the NEC Championships.
