Virginia Tech’s post-diving lead shrinks to 63 over charging NC State after day 2 of ACC Championships

Day 2 finals recap

5 Big Things from Day 2

The first day of individual racing at the men’s ACC Championships saw NC State start to chip away at Virginia Tech’s big diving lead, narrowing it from 247 points to just 63 with two days of racing left to go.

The forgotten men in the middle of that battle are the UNC Tar Heels, who still sit second, 8 up on their North Carolina rivals and 55 back of Virginia Tech.

As a reminder: all of the diving events took place last week during women’s ACCs, giving VT a 247-point cushion in defending their conference title. But NC State stormed through on a huge day to cut that lead to about a quarter. That included their dominant 4-up 50 free performance as well as a nation-leading 200 free relay time that shattered the conference record.

The race between Virginia Tech and UNC is holding remarkably steady: the H2Okies had a 53-point lead after diving and now sit on a 55-point margin. But NC State is making up ground on both in a hurry.

Louisville hasn’t made up as many points on Virginia Tech as they probably need to, though. They trailed by 227 after diving and now trail by 220. The Cards are making ground on 4th-place Virginia, though, as they turned a 124-point deficit into just a 4-point margin tonight.
