CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — UNI swimming and diving dove into the 2023-24 season on Saturday morning with its Purple and Gold Intrasquad meet inside the Glen F. Henry Pool, getting its first opportunity to hit the water ahead on next week’s regular season opener.
The Gold Team would emerge victorious from the meet over the purple team with a narrow 127-123 win.
The 200-yard medley combination of Abby McCorkle, Sydney Aird, Hannah Nedder and Faith Larsen would win the first event of the day for the Gold Team, as the Purple Team followed up with a 200-yard freestyle win by Morgan Meyer and a victory by Ema Lavigne in the 200-yard individual medley. Larsen brought the Gold Team back into the win column by clinching the 50-yard freestyle.
The Purple Team took first in the 100-yard butterfly led by Scout Bergwall, as well as the 100-yard freestyle won by Amber Finke. The Gold squad responded with victories in the 100-yard backstroke (McCorkle) and the 100-yard breaststroke (Aird).
The Purple Team struck back with wins in the 200 and 500-yard freestyle events to tie the score at 116-116 heading into the final two races of the day. In the unique contest of divers competing in a 50-yard freestyle sprint, Erica Peters took home first place, while freshman Halle Grimm won the swimmers diving competition on the one-meter springboard, securing the four-point win for the Gold Team.

The Panthers will officially begin their season next Friday, Oct. 6 in a dual meet at Iowa. Competition is slated to begin in Iowa City at 5 p.m. CT at the Campus Recreation-Wellness Center.
