UNC to Host Annual Nike Cup

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The University of North Carolina swimming and diving program will play host to the annual Janis Hape Dowd Swimming & Diving Championships this Thursday through Saturday at the Maurice J. Koury Natatorium.

This marks the 25th time since 1986 (the first year of competition at Koury Natatorium) that the Tar Heel aquatics program has hosted the invitational, normally on the weekend prior to Thanksgiving.  The meet is run in conjunction with a generous gift from Janis Hape Dowd, 1976 U.S. Olympian who swam at Carolina from 1976-80.

Preliminaries each day begin at 9:30 a.m.  Finals each night will commence at 5:30 p.m.

In addition to the host Tar Heels, other competing teams including NC State (men and women), Navy (men’s swimmers & divers, women’s divers), Duke (men and women), East Carolina (men and women), Old Dominion (men and women), Yale (men and women), Marshall (women) and James Madison (divers only).

There will be four finals heats each evening – a Championship A final (places 1-8), a Consolation B final (places 9-16), a Bonus C final (places 17-24) and a non-scoring D final.  All event’s will be held at Koury Natatorium with the exception of 10-meter platform diving which will be held at Duke University.
