UMBC and Bucknell exhibitioned on Saturday to open the 2015-16 season. Full Results can be found here. Maddy Popalis won her first collegiate race at the meet for UMBC. For Bucknell, Louis Behnen won 3 events.
UMBC:
Lewisburg, Pa.—The UMBC swimming and diving teams opened the 2015-16 season with an exhibition meet against the Bison on Saturday. Several Retrievers earned first place finishes in the non-scored meet.
For the women, the Retrievers won both relays of the day, in the 200 medley and 400 free relays. The quartet of Lauren Day, Emily Escobedo, Amanda Day, and Kristie Langford took first in the 200 medley with a time of 1:45.97. The 400 free relay team of Hania Moro, Laura Massicotte, Catherine Frediani and Allison Atkinson touched the wall in 3:33.53.
Individually, Moro led things off with a win in 1000 free, out-touching teammate Laura Massicotte by six seconds. Kayla Lilly took gold in the 400 IM with a time of 4:34.17. Freshman Maddy Popalis picked up her first collegiate win in the 200 breast in a time of 2:28.21. Moro would sweep the distance events, winning the 500 free in just over five minutes.
Other Retriever victors were Lilly (200 IM), Popalis (100 breast, 50 breast), Moro (200 free) and Amanda Day (50 fly). On the boards, Coco Darelius swept both diving disciplines, scoring 258.23 on the 1 meter and 245.78 on the 3 meter boards.
The men kicked off the year with a win in the 200 medley relay. Nikola Trajkovic, Leo Endres, Philip Adejumo and Gregor Spoerlein touched the wall in 1:33.60 for the win.
Rookie Felix Reichsfield was a winner in the 1000 free, clocking in at 9:39.72. Andrew McKissick also picked up a win in the 200 fly, touching in at 1:54.60.
Other Retriever winners were Luca Santinelli (200 breast), Spoerlein (200 free, 100 free, 50 free), Reichsfield (500 free), Trajkovic (200 IM, 100 IM) Adejumo (100 fly, 50 fly), Alexander Gilese (100 back, 50 back), Endres (100 breast), and Leo Mercer (50 breast).
The Retrievers are back in the pool next Saturday, October 10 at Rider.

Bucknell:
Women
LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell women’s swimming and diving team won eight individual events in its season-opening meet against UMBC on Saturday at Kinney Natatorium. Senior Emma Levendoski led the way for the Bison with three victories.
Levendoski wrapped up a perfect career record against UMBC with wins in the 50-, 100- and 200-yard backstroke. The senior competed in 12 individual races against the Retrievers in the past four seasons and took first in all 12. Her title in the 50 back on Saturday came in a time of 27.25. She won the 100 back in 56.61 and the 200 back in 2:02.90. Bucknell’s Rachel Perry was the runner-up in the 100 back, while Julianna Foss took second in the 200 back.
Foss also had an individual win on the day, touching the wall in 57.24 to take first in the 100 fly. Other winners for the Bison included Brittany Bishop (200 free), Dani Potis (200 fly), Abigail Rosenberg (100 free) and Rachel McGoff (100 I.M.).
The Bison dominated the 200 free race, taking the top four spots. Bishop’s win came in 1:55.93, while McGoff was just hundredths of a second behind her in 1:55.97. Caroline Edelman and Stephanie Boyd finished third and fourth, respectively.
Hania Moro and Madyson Popalis won three events apiece for UMBC. The Retrievers are the defending champions in the America East.
Bucknell will have a weekend off before competing in its Patriot League opener at Boston University on Saturday, Oct. 17. The meet is scheduled for 2 p.m.
Men
LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell men’s swimming and diving team won five individual events and one relay in its season-opening meet against UMBC on Saturday at Kinney Natatorium. Junior Louis Behnen led the way with three wins, while senior Tyler Wenzel took first in both diving events.
Behnen’s wins came in two individual events and one relay. He took first in the 400 I.M. with a time of 4:02.83 and won the 200 free in 1:42.95. Sophomore Chris Devlin was the runner-up in the 200 free and won the 200 back. Vincent Filippini, Jack Robinson and Sam Rutan joined Behnen on the first-place 400 free relay.
Wenzel opened his final season at Bucknell by winning both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events. He earned a score of 258.53 in the 1-meter and 239.03 in the 3-meter. Senior Patrick Alvermann was the runner-up in both events.
Gregor Spoerlein won three individual events for UMBC. The Retrievers are the defending champions in the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association.
Bucknell will have a weekend off before competing in its Patriot League opener at Boston University on Saturday, Oct. 17. The meet is scheduled for 2 p.m.
