UC Santa Barbara swim finished out their season strong in a Blue Green rivalry meet against Cal Poly. Both the men and women teams brought home a win as they honored the seniors on Jan 27 at Campus Pool. The families and friends cheered on their Gaucho seniors as they were recognized one by one for their achievements these past four years at UCSB.
“Today, like each final home dual meet of the season, the team swam for our senior class. At times throughout the year, the season can feel very long. But, on senior day, I continue to hear how fast it has all flown by. I’m very proud of this group of seniors and they are special to me as we shared our first day at UCSB back in the fall of 2014. The seniors will never forget their final home meet at Campus Pool and l look forward to our last few weeks of preparation for conference,” stated Head Coach Matt Macedo.
The meet was filled with excitement and sadness as the Gaucho seniors swam in their home pool for the last time. Senior Chris Nolan explained, “I feel honored to have represented the Gauchos these past four years. I have made unforgettable memories with both my teammates and coaches that will last me a lifetime.”
The seniors honored include Billy Mullis, Kevin Mendoza, Nick DeVito, Yoessef Tibazi, Michael Forbes, Nolan, Dasha Depew, Liz Pulido, Allison Stevens, and Leanne Sun.
On the women’s side, there were seven different Gauchos that placed first in individual events. Brittney Straw swept both of the breaststroke races with a 1:05.00 in the 100 and a 2:17.86 in the 200. Heaven Quintana swept in both of the butterfly events going 55.20 in the 100, 2:00.25 in the 200, and also won the 200 individual medley (2:06.59).
Stevens finished out her four years as a Gaucho strong with winning the 100 backstroke (56.92). Rachel Forbescontributed to her team with a first place in the 1000 freestyle (10:09.61). Rachel Kulik stole first in the 50 freestyle with a time of 23.75. Jacquelyn Harris placed first in the 100 freestyle (51.74). Elena England won the 200 backstroke with a final time of 2:03.98.
The men side also had seven different Gauchos win individual events in the senior meet. Mason Tittle swept the short-distance freestyles getting first in both the 50 (20.51) and the 100 (45.06). Joe Kmak took first in both of the breaststroke races going 56.77 in the 100 and 2:03.69 in the 200. Mullis also swept in his events, snatching first in the 100 backstroke (49.59) and the 200 backstroke (1:46.72).
Mendoza contributed to the wins with a 1:48.24 in the 200 butterfly. Tibazi also finished out his Gaucho years with a win in the 100 butterfly (47.71). Junior Logan Hotckiss took first in the 1000 freestyle (9:38.05) and Joe Lastelic won in the 200 freestyle (1:39.90).
The team is now focused on the MPSF Championships that are starting on Feb. 14 at the East LA Community College.

Senior Cal Poly swimmers Nolan Newland and Zach Cootes each picked up a win apiece on the men’s side and senior Bonnie Diamond won two events as the Mustang swim team competed against UC Santa Barbara Saturday in the Blue-Green rivalry.
On the women’s side, Diamond won the 500 freestyle with her season best time of 4:58.05. She then won the 200 free with a time of 1:52.10, beating second place by a full two seconds. She also placed second in the 1000 free, swimming a season best time of 10:11.88.
In the 1000 free, freshman Alissa Marvin swam a personal best time of 11:08.05. Sophomore Ali Epple finished second in the 200 backstroke, finishing with a season best time of 2:05.54.
On the men’s side, Newland won the 500 free with a time of 4:34.63, good for the third best swim of the day for the men’s side. Cootes won the 200 IM with a time of 1:51.90, almost a full three seconds faster than second place. Elsewhere, senior Pearu Pold placed second in the 1000 free with a time of 9:42.31 and freshman Alex Nikolaev finished third with a time of 9:45.53.
In the team events, Cal Poly’s “A” relay team of freshman Emelia Piccininni, junior Emily Imfeld, senior Elise Goetzland senior Bonnie Diamond won the women’s 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:30.70. On the men’s side, the Mustangs finished second in both the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:04.89 and the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:33.06.
The men’s team fell to the Gauchos 170-92 while the women’s team lost 171-91.
Cal Poly closes out the regular season at home Saturday, Feb. 3 in a dual meet against UC Santa Cruz for senior day. The meet begins at noon at Anderson Aquatic Center.
