Two-Sport Nebraska State Champ Cameron Carney Gives Verbal to GCU

Cameron Carney of Norfolk, Nebraska has verbally committed to swim for Grand Canyon University in the fall of 2017. Carney is a senior at Norfolk High School, where he runs cross country in the fall and swims in the winter. His team just won the cross country state championships last weekend, adding another state title to the one he won in the 100 free last February.

“I’m extremely excited to swim for Grand Canyon next year! The team is constantly improving. The coaches are very knowledgeable about the training regimen and the needs of athletes. I love the team atmosphere and can’t wait to compete with them next year!”

Carney swims year-round for Norfolk YMCA Aquajets, specializing mostly in freestyle and backstroke. At the 2016 Nebraska State High School Championships, Carney won the 100 free (46.66) and was runner-up in the 200 free (1:43.32). As a sophomore he was third in both the 100 free and 100 back, and he took sixth in the 100 back as a freshman.

In club swimming, Carney competed at Jenks Sectionals in the 50/100/200m free, 100/200m back, and 100m breast. At the Midwestern LSC Short Course Championships in March he added 200 breast and 100 fly to the mix, notching best times in the 200 back, 100/200 breast, and 100 fly. Carney finished the summer at Austin Futures, and picked up new times in the 100/200m backstrokes.
