The College Swimming and Diving Association of America (CSCAA) has announced its All-American team selections for the 2019-20 season after the campaign was brought to an abrupt halt due to the outbreak of COVID-19.
Dating back to 1985, the honor of being named an All-American has been earned by competing at the NCAA Championships. Swimmers finishing in the top-eight earned first-team recognition, and the consolation finalists (9th-16th) were given Honorable Mention honors. However, with the championships cancelled this year due to the global pandemic, the CSCAA had to alter the criteria.
The criteria for Division I is as follows:
“All Relays Achieving ‘A’ Standards, individuals selected to the NCAA Championships, and divers entered in uncontested events from the Zone C Diving Qualification meet are named All-American.”
This has led to an unprecedented number of selections as Greg Earhart, the executive director of CSCAA, opted not to penalize any student-athletes who didn’t have the opportunity to compete for a spot on the All-American team.
“Our sport is replete with previously-unheralded swimmers and divers who have gone on not just to All-America honors, but also to national championships and Olympic Team spots,” he said in the official CSCAA press release.
As a result, there is no first-team or second-team distinction this season.
On the men’s side, 375 swimmers and divers earned Division I All-American status this year. In 2019, there were 243, as the change in criteria resulted in a 54.3 percent increase. There was also a notable increase of teams with at least one All-American from last season, rising from 43 to 58.
The Michigan Wolverines and Texas Longhorns were the two teams with the most men to be honored this season, both having 23 All-Americans on their respective rosters. Louisville was a distant third with 16. Texas led the field last season with 14. Michigan’s count was boosted by their position in Zone C, which gave them 7 diving All-Americans, only 2 of which had actually qualified for NCAAs on the 3-meter when the meet was called off. Louisville (4) also benefited from that rule.

Mixed feelings. I like the idea of recognizing everyone who qualified, but I think maybe they should have come up with a different designation for this year, to distinguish from All-Americans who earned it the hard way. Maybe something like “All-American Nominee.”
Thinking of starting my own All-American listing for swimming and diving. Any collegiate swimmer who makes 25 yard with out stopping or any diver who springs off the board and hits the pool is an ALL-AMERICAN!
If all individuals selected were named all-American, why isn’t Paul Rogers from Cal Poly on the list?
We’ve been alerted by the CSCAA that they’ve identified a few errors and will be releasing updated lists as soon as they can get it all worked out.
So I know that people are not okay with giving everyone AA. I don’t really think that you should give it based on what the swimmers are ranked in the psych sheet is the best thing.
I think that this is the correct thing to do. This was something outside of these swimmers’ control. It is not just giving everyone a trophy (they had to qualify for this). This is a situation that hasn’t happened before and it deserves an action that hasn’t happened before.
For the record, I was an All American and I am fine with it because I understand the situation. I also understand what it takes to even be invited.
Here’s my big problem with it: swimming already gives out way way way more All-American awards than most collegiate sports. So you’ve now watered it down even further. Sure, maybe a swimmer who was 17th in an event in-season would have jumped to 16th after they hit their taper. But…the 16th-best point guard or quarterback doesn’t get All-American anyway. So…
I could’ve lived with top 24. I don’t think there’s many, if any, swimmers that really get robbed there. TBH I even could have lived with “everyone who made the meet.”
But, when they gave it to every diver in Zone C (essentially)…that to me crossed the line of what makes sense.
Congratulations to the AA teams. They worked hard for it.
Relay only swimmers should have been given HM status.
And the Texas swimmers who were left off the roster but made the cuts should be given AA certificates.
I’m sorry, but that’s ridiculous! Some people work their whole lives to get that and they just hand it out like it’s candy. Why not just top 8 to make it somewhat logical?
Most logical decision would be to not award it at all.
Lots of discussion about Texas having to potentially leave qualifiers at home. Didn’t realize Michigan had so many also. Well done Wolverines!
Michigan’s count was boosted by the fact that Zone C didn’t finish their diving events, and so a lot of divers got AA status based on that.
I feel for the athletes but as someone who earned their AA honors this is insulting.
Let’s give everyone a trophy attitude.
I think they should have only given it to top 16 not anyone who qualified
I am with you. Score the meet as a virtual meet off the psych sheet. Only award the Top 16. Let points fall how they would fall with relays as well.
And to everyone who would argue… kids weren’t shaved or tapered for their conference meets… that was a choice… and these numbers are few and far between.
When you say points…you want them to like, give out a national championship based on that?
I’m ok with some sort of hypothetical AA awards, because they don’t really count for much besides bragging rights. But, I don’t think I can get on board with actually giving official team points or placements based on psych sheet scoring.
Not sure about that. Going by the psych sheet just awards those who go their best times at conference and cant replicate them at NCAAs. I agree its kinda silly for everyone who barely qualified to get the title as well but its one year and things will go back to normal next year. Its nice for them to give something (even though it’s not much) to all of those that qualified. Its the only award most of us have been given since the end of our season was taken from us. Thank you to the CSCAA its not much but its something to ease the pain.
