Adam Mania was born on August 31, 1983 to Polish immigrants Genowefa Szczerbowska and Zbigniew Mania. He grew up in rural Hickman, Nebraska where he began swimming on the small Country Kids Swim Team. Mania trained in a two lane 20 yard pool until heading to the University of Wisconsin - Madison. While attending Wisconsin from 2001 to 2006, Mania became the school record holder in the 100 and 200 back, 200 breast, and 200 IM. He was also on Wisconsin's Big 10 championship winning 400 free relay team and earned 13 All American honors during his college career. Thanks to his dual Polish and American citizenship, Mania represented Poland at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens where he swam the 100 and 200 back. Unfortunately, Mania did not qualify for the finals in either of those events in Athens. Mania continued swimming after those Olympic Games, winning the 100 back and 200 IM at the US National Championships in 2006. After graduating from Wisconsin, Mania became an assistant coach for the Walter Schroeder Aquatic Center's swim team in Brown Deer, Wisconsin.
