Talking about crazy splits on relays
If my memory isn’t getting muddled by the crazy swims this past week, didn’t Jerry Fox of NCState outsplit Selinger on the 4×100 medley relay for the win.
Something wild like a 40.2?
University of Virginia
4 x 50 yard medley relay
C. Curzan – E. Weber – G. Walsh – M. Parker
4 x 200 yard freestyle relay
A. Canny – A. Walsh – A. Moesch – K. Grimes
Points matter more than relay records at the 2025 NCAA DI Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships.
If A. Walsh matches her fastest 200 yard freestyle split (1:41.18), the University of Virginia women’s swimming program has a shot at the 4 x 200 yard freestyle relay.
What if they put A Walsh on both night 1 relays and leave her off the 4×50 free: G Walsh, Curzan, Moesch, Parker?
I think this is most likely
C. Curzan (23.11 backstroke split) and G. Walsh (20.87 butterfly split) provide enough cover for E. Weber (26.46 breaststroke split) on the 4 x 50 yard medley relay.
Note: Season Best relay splits
A coaching staff tends to harp on fresh swimmers for the relays. A session double most likely won’t bring the best out of A. Walsh on the 4 x 200 yard freestyle relay.
50 free splits for the women:
G Walsh 20.02
Huske 20.60 (Medley Relay) 21.04 (FR, lead off)
Dennis 20.87 (MR), 20.78 (free relay)
Paegle 20.91 (FR; last event of session)
Flynn 21.03 (MR) 21.11 (FR; last event of session)
Sticklen 21.07
Longi 21.19
Five 20 point splits by four different women!
Two other women go 21.zero!
For comparison, there were several 21.1’s and 21.2’s at NCAAs last year, but Walsh’s 20.23 on the 200 free relay was the only split under 21.00.
The University of Texas women’s diving program was the difference (326 points). Don’t be so shocked.
At the NCAA DI Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships, Todd DeSorbo has shown that he is not willing to rob Peter (4 x 50 yard medley relay) to save Paul (4 x 200 yard freestyle relay) since Gretchen Walsh arrived on the University of Virginia campus.
Notable to me about SEC relays was that the fovorite to win men’s NCs, Texas, didn’t win one relay. And the Texas women, with no UVA, only won one relay!
Let’s see how much is left in tank for NCs next month! I think UVA women swam “off” events so that took the pressure off a bit from being on. Of course their off events are still amazing for most people!
This is just what my monday morning needed! Can’t wait for NCAAs.
