LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Pepperdine women’s swimming team completed the final day of the WCC Cup on Saturday. Although the Waves took second behind San Diego, they beat Loyola Marymount and took home wins in six different events.
MEET RECAP
The Waves started day two with a big win in the 200 freestyle relay, where the team of Jasmine Williams, Julianna Birlin, Jenna Sanchez, and Amy Griffin out touched the squad from San Diego by four tenths of a second.
Emily Morton had the first individual win of the day in the 400 IM, cruising into the finish in a time of 4:35.55. Sammie Slater was the next winner for the Waves in the 200 freestyle, finishing just four tenths ahead of teammate Nohea Lileikis in a time of 1:56.21.
Caroline Eckel had another outstanding performance in the 100 backstroke, taking home first place swimming a time of 57.82. Morton controlled the 200 backstroke once again, winning with a time of 2:07.56.
The Waves closed out the meet with an impressive 400 freestyle relay from Lileikis, Slater, Brilin and Griffin, who posted a win of 3:36.34, over three seconds better than any other competitor.
NEXT UP: The Waves will be back home for senior day on January 25th against Azusa Pacific. Diving will begin at 10 a.m. followed by senior recognition at 11 a.m. and swimming at 11:10 a.m.

Loyola Marymount University Lions senior Lanna Kozlowski finished her last collegiate race at Burns Aquatics Center by dominating the field in the 1650 ‘mile’ event as part of the two-day 2020 West Coast Conference Cup competition between LMU, San Diego and Pepperdine. Kozlowski touched the wall in 17:50.00 more than 25-seconds ahead of second-place finisher Anna Luckenbach of San Diego.
Kozlowski started off the two-day competition Friday afternoon in similar fashion, winning the 500 freestyle in a season best time of 5:09.61 with freshman teammate Lily Gallagher taking second in 5:10.88 setting up a 1-2 Lion finish. Gallagher achieved a second Top 3 finish on Saturday taking third place in the 200 freestyle while Kozlowski added a third-place finish in the 400 individual medley.
Seniors Christine Chan and Gabby Carufel also had outstanding last swims at Burns during the competition. Chan nabbed a third-place finish in the 200 individual medley on Friday, followed by a fourth-place finish in the 100 butterfly on Saturday while Carufel placed fourth and sixth in the 100 and 200 backstroke events. Senior Olivia Nielsen finished right behind Chan in the butterfly event in fifth place.
Several other Lion swimmers placed in the top eight in their individual events earning points for the LMU team. Freshmen Kelli Andrade and Mikayla Tseng each scored in two events with Andrade taking second in the 100 breaststroke and third in the 200 breast while Tseng placed second in the 100 butterfly and seventh in the 100 freestyle.
Junior Taylor Pajunen added a couple points to the Lion’s score with a sixth-place finish in the 200 butterfly while sophomore Lydia Zicker added two points placing eighth in both the 400 IM and 200 breaststroke. Fellow sophomore, Sabine Caplin recorded a season-best time in the 400 individual medley placing sixth while junior Serena Myatt earned a sixth-place finish in the 50 freestyle.
LMU’s six seniors (Gabby Carufel, Christine Chan, Lanna Kozlowski, Natalie Morlock, Olivia Nielsen and Samantha Smith) were honored by family members and teammates at a luncheon following the competition.
Up next for the Lions is a trip to St. George, Utah to compete against Dixie State on Saturday, Jan. 25 for one last competition before heading into the Pacific Collegiate Swim Conference Championships on Feb. 12-15 at East Los Angeles College.
