MILFORD, Conn. – Saturday’s Northeast Conference women’s swimming and diving meet came down to the final race. Sacred Heart University pulled through in the 200 freestyle relay to defeat St. Francis Brooklyn, 150-149, at McCann Natatorium.
Going into the final race, Sacred Heart held a 144-138 margin. Even though the Terriers won the relay, the Pioneers placed second and third to secure the extra point needed for the team triumph.
Sacred Heart finished first and second in both diving events. Olivia McNicholas won the five-diver voluntary event with a score of 180.30 then took the six-dive optional at 231.30. Regan Santoro was second in the five-dive while Natalie Carbone took runner-up in the six-dive competition.
Also winning twice was senior Kelly Bartnett. She took the 100 backstroke in 1:00.41 then led a 1-2-3 SHU finish in the 100 freestyle. Ash Ayla was just off her season best time in the 100 back as she recorded a second-place time of 1:03.29.
Bartnett’s winning freestyle time of 55.12 was just 0.14 ahead of Emma Davis while Hyzell Lim hit the wall in third. Davis was third in the 50 free, coming in just behind teammate Emma McCall. McCall placed second in the 100 butterfly.
SHU swept the backstroke events as Casey Barrett posted a winning time of 2:11.48. She also finished second in the 200 free. Picking up a victory in the 200 butterfly was Melanie Sanchez as she touched in at 2:14.23.
The Pioneers swim their last dual meet of the season on February 4 when they host Merrimack at 12:30 for Senior Day.

FAIRFIELD, CT – St. Francis Brooklyn women’s swimming and diving went toe-to-toe with Sacred Heart Saturday afternoon, falling by a score of 150-149 in an evenly matched meet. The 16-event competition went down to the wire, and the Terriers will look to build off the day when they see the Pioneers at NEC Championships next month.
The meet began with a win in the 200-yard medley relay, as Cassandre Zenon, Elayna Pistrin, Kristy Nagtzaam and Raquel Torrez powered their way to a .54 second victory.
Mariajose Lopez followed that up with a win in the 1000-yard freestyle, eclipsing the 11-minute mark with ease at 10:37.51. Her closest suitor finished in 11:23.37. Later on, she also won the 500-yard freestyle (5:20.63) and was followed in second by Anapaula Gomez (5:27.42).
Boel Berquist came out victorious in the 200-yard freestyle, finishing in just under two minutes. The freshman added another win in the 50-yard freestyle, getting to the wall just ahead of two Sacred Heart swimmers to nab first. She also finished second in the 200-yard backstroke.
The Terriers took first and second in the 100-yard breaststroke, as Pistrin grabbed her second win of the day. Nagtzaam finished right behind her. Pistrin added another victory in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:28.57).
Gomez and Laetitia Bouc each had a solid performance in the 200-yard butterfly, taking second and third place. Bouc then ended her day in style, winning the 100-yard butterfly (1:00.86).
The meet concluded with Pistrin’s third victory – the 400-yard IM. Gomez added another second-place result in the event. In the final event, the 200-yard freestyle relay squad of Nagtzaam, Torrez, Lopez and Bergquist defeated Sacred Heart’s top team by .43 seconds.
The Terriers are back in action on Wednesday against Fordham. The meet will begin at 5 p.m.
