Rose-Hulman’s Orion Martin Earns NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship

TERRE HAUTE, IND. — Upcoming 2016 graduate Orion Martin became just the second NCAA postgraduate scholarship winner at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in a generation, in results released by the NCAA.

A total of 29 men and 29 women from all NCAA Division I, II and III winter sports were honored for a combination of their athletic and academic success. Each recipient earns $7,500 to pursue post-graduate studies.

Martin joins 2013 recipient and five-time NCAA Division III high jump national champion Liz Evans as the only Rose-Hulman NCAA postgraduate scholars in the last 25 years.

Per the NCAA, to qualify student-athletes must excel academically and athletically, be in their final year of eligibility and plan to pursue graduate study. A 3.2 grade point average and a nomination by their institution’s faculty athletics representative are also requirements to be eligible for the award. The scholarship has been awarded since 1964.

Martin is expected to earn dual bachelor’s degrees in physics and computer science at Rose-Hulman’s Commencement ceremony later this month. He also earned CoSIDA Academic All-American honors in 2015 and is on the national ballot for the 2016 Academic All-America contest. Martin currently registers a grade point average of 3.88.

In swimming and diving, Martin finished sixth, sixth and seventh nationally in the 100-yard butterfly at the 2014, 2015 and 2016 NCAA Division III Swimming National Championships. He was the four-time CCIW Swimmer of the Year, a CoSIDA Academic All-American and holds or shares nine school records. He also helped the 2015 and 2016 men’s teams win the first conference swimming championships in Rose-Hulman history. His performances include 16 all-conference awards and 10 individual or relay conference championship performances.
