The Olympic torch continued its journey through the state of São Paulo on the 76th day of the torch relay, travelling through five different cities.
It began in Sorocaba, the eighth largest city in the state of São Paulo. With a population of nearly 650,000, the city has been undergoing extensive urbanization projects to improve streets and infrastructure. It is home to many tourist attractions, including “Quinzinho de Barros”, the city zoo which is one of the largest in South America.
It then travelled through Tatuí, a city of 117,000 people known as “Music City”. It has the largest music school in Latin America and is known as the center of excellence in music teaching in Latin America. The torch trudged onto the city of Botucatu, home to 140,000.
The torch then moved onto Lençois Paulista and finally Bauru. Lençois Paulista is home to the largest library in the state and is home to 66,000, while Bauru is a major urban center in the state due to a strong service sector, many college campuses and the city’s location being at a junction of three railroads and highways.
