Rio Torch Relay Day 73: Summer Sanders Carries Torch Through Curitiba

On each day of the official Olympic torch relay, carrying the Olympic flame to the Olympic cauldron in Rio de Janeiro, the Rio2016 Facbeook page is posting brilliant and spectacular images from one of the world’s unique and most beautiful landscapes. Each day until August 5th, we will bring you these stunning images.

On day 73 of the Olympic torch relay the torch travelled through just two cities: Curitiba and Sao Jose dos Pinhais. Both are located in the state of Parana, as the torch moved on from its travels in Santa Catarina.

Among the torch bearers on day 73 was Summer Sanders, a four-time Olympic medalist in swimming from the United States. Sanders won gold in the 200 fly and 400 medley relay, and added a silver and a bronze in the 200 IM and 400 IM. All medals were won at the 1992 Games in Barcelona. Sanders ran representing the USOC (United States Olympic Committee).

The city of Curibita is the largest and is the capital city of Parana, with a population around 1,880,000. It is the eighth most populous city in Brazil. Curibita is a popular tourist destination for its nature and other places such as the Municipal Market, Japan Square, and the Wire Opera House.

Sao Jose dos Pinhais, the other city the torch went through, was part of the metropolitan region of Curibita. Its population has grown from 196,000 to 280,000 from 2000 to 2008.
