Riley Pestorius, a distance freestyler/butterflier from the Somerset Valley YMCA, has verbally committed to the application process at Brown University.*
Pestorius experienced an impressive junior year in both short-course and long-course seasons. After an 11th-place finish in the 500 free, swimming for Bridgewater-Raritan High School at the 2016 New Jersey State Meet, Pestorius swam the 200/500/1000/1650 frees at the 2016 YMCA Short Course National Championships in April, scoring 8th in the mile, 11th in the 1000, and 13th in the 500. Pestorius wrapped up the summer a multiple-event A finalist at the 2016 YMCA Long Course Nationals. He finished eighth in both the 400/1500m frees, sixth in the 800m free, and fifth in the 100m fly.
Over the past 12 months, he has dropped 55 seconds in the 1500, 18 seconds in the 800, 11 seconds in the 400 free and 5 seconds in the 100 fly en route to qualifying for Winter Junior Nationals in multiple events. His 56.71 at Long Course YNats was his first time under 1:00 in the event.
Dan Roth, his coach at Somerset Valley YMCA, told SwimSwam, “Riley is a hard worker in both the pool and the classroom. We are looking forward to watching him continue to evolve in and out of the water at the collegiate level.”
