Rhory Legendre of the Woodlands Swim Team in north Houston has verbally committed to the TCU Horned Frogs.
Legendre, a two-time Texas State Championship qualifier in 5A (big schools), and a two-time member of the USA Swimming Scholastic All-American Team, is primarily a distance freestyler. His yards bests are:
- 200 free – 1:43.02
- 500 free – 4:33.90
- 1000 free – 9:29.38
- 1650 free – 15:39.69 (Summer Juniors)
- 200 fly – 1:55.68
Legendre was 7th at the NCSA Long Course Junior National Championships this summer in the 1500 free as well.
This is an important signing for TCU, as historically they’ve had to look beyond the rich recruiting bounds of Texas for the majority of their swimmers. Even with relatively few Division I men’s programs as compared to the number of male high school swimmers, only 11 of the program’s 26 swimmers are from the state of Texas.
The ratios haven’t improved much since joining the Big 12, a more traditionally-Texas conference, either: their freshman class has only 3 Texans in 8 swimmers.
Grabbing a swimmer like Legendre out of the state meet, and out of one of the best programs in the state, could start to turn that trend around for the Horned Frogs.
