How It Happened
Freshman Lily Hsu led a dominant diving effort for Rhode Island Saturday in Rhody’s sweep of Springfield College and Coast Guard. The Rams beat host Springfield 188-109, and knocked off Coast Guard by nearly the same score, 188-110.
Rhode Island won nine of 16 events on the day, but it was truly powerful in the two diving events, getting four of the top five scores in both.
In the 1-meter dive, Hsu headlined a Rhody contingent that had four of the five highest scores on the day. She won the event with a score of 238.70, followed by senior Willow Dunster’s 230.70. Freshman Olivia Winslow (219.55) and senior Brianna Tocco (213.50) placed fourth and fifth, respectively.
It was Hsu again taking the honors in the 3-meter dive with her score of 274.35. Rhody swept the podium, as junior Carleigh Schlissel (248.60) and Winslow (234.10) were the next highest scores. Tocco was fifth (212.55) as the Rams again dominated off the board.
Standouts From the Pool
The team of Julia Renna, Emily Makin, Ella Hacker and Abby Zadorozny got Rhode Island off to an early lead, winning the 400-yard medley relay in the first race of the day. Rhody’s quartet finished in a time of 4:02.26, holding off Coast Guard by 2.48 seconds for the win.
Sophomore Maddie Tetreault delivered a big win in the 1,000-yard freestyle with her time of 10:54.83. She was more than 17 seconds ahead of the field.
Freshman Ella Hacker and sophomore Emma Lee were the top two finishers in the 200-yard butterfly. Hacker had a winning time of 2:10.3, while Lee posted a time of 2:17.70.
It was one of two individual victories for Hacker, who also placed first in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 59:08 seconds.
Freshman Rylee Kelly picked up another individual win, this time taking the honors in the 200-yard freestyle. Her time of 1:59.95 was just ahead of teammate Lyndsay Warner (2:00.13), as the Rhody freshmen gave the team a 1-2 finish.
Kelly also won the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:19.33, just ahead of teammate, junior Mia Bonvissuto (5:22.53).
Over the last two meets, Kelly has four individual wins. She won the 500- and 1000-yard freestyle races against Siena and Assumption.
Senior Julia Renna won the 200-backstroke for the second straight meet, winning in 2:10.88. Juniors Wynter Sands (2:14.26) and Anna Bodycoat (2:15.87) placed third and fourth in the race, respectively.
Renna and Sands also finished second and third, respectively, in the 100-yard backstroke. Renna was just out touched at the wall. Coast Guard’s Katie Dennin won in 1:01.46, while Renna finished in 1:01.55.
Freshman Abby Zadorzny offered the team a second-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.97 seconds.
What’s Next
Rhode Island is off until Wednesday, Nov. 9 when it hosts in-state rival Providence for a head-to-head meet in Tootell Aquatic Center. The competition begins at 5 p.m.
