How It Happened
Rhode Island was able to pull away from in-state rival Providence over the final three events to record its 17th straight victory over the Friars Wednesday night.
Leading 106-100 through 11 events, the Rams (5-0) showed their depth in the 50-meter butterfly, 100-meter individual medley and the 200-meter freestyle relay to put the meet away. Over the final three events, Rhode Island outscored Providence 43-9.
Michaela Degnan got the run started in the 50 fly, taking first place with a time of 30.38 seconds. Jackie Triglia was second and Shauna Killane placed fourth in the race.
URI again took three of the top four spots in the next race. Mackenzie Thomas held off PC’s Maddie O’Connor to win the 100 IM. Fellow Rams Brooke Kelley and Emma Lee were third and fourth, respectively, as URI took 14 points In the event.
With the final result all but locked up, Rhode Island’s team of Quinn Frost, Ellie Oswald, Michaela Degnan and Grace Kennedy won the 200 free relay in a time of 1:51.77, nearly two seconds ahead of the field. The Rams also took third in the event, thanks to the team of Casey Fusco, Jackie Triglia, Maddie Tetrault and Jenna Salem.
Standouts From the Pool
- The team of Michaela Degnan, Casey Fusco, Jackie Triglia and Ellie Oswlad opened the meet with a key win in the 200 SC meter medley relay. With a time of 2:04.53, URI edged PC at the wall by just .12 seconds.
- Brooke Kelley won the 50-meter breastroke in a time of 34.79 seconds. She was nearly a half-second ahead of PC’s Kathryn Presley (35.18) to the wall.
- For the third straight meet, freshman Emma Lee produced an individual win, taking the honors in the 100 butterfly. Her time of 1:07.22 was .2 seconds ahead of PC’s Maddy O’Connor.
- Marta Baumann won the 1-meter dive, leading a sweep of the top four spots by URI. Carleigh Schlissel, Willow Dunster and Delaney Smith were the top four scorers in the event.
- Ellie Oswald recorded three first-place finishes on the night. In addition to being part of the winning 200 free and 200 medley relays, she also won the 100 backstroke.
What’s Next
Rhode Island is off the next nine days until it returns to the Tootell Aquatic Center for the three-day Harold Anderson Invitational, which begins on Friday, Nov. 19. The Rams host the seven-team field that includes Maine, Holy Cross, Providence, Binghamton, Vermont and Roger Willams.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women’s swimming and diving team hosted the University of Rhode Island on Nov. 10 at Taylor Natatorium in Providence, R.I. URI won the meet, 149-112.
The Friars were led by multi-event winners Grace Erickson and Jennifer Bankes.
Erickson earned a first-place finish in the 200-meter freestyle with a time of 2:10.18. She captured her second win of the evening in the 400-meter free, finishing in a time of 4:35.48.
Sophia Roche claimed an individual victory in the 50-meter backstroke (31.57), while Kathryn Presley paced her competitors in the 100-meter backstroke with a winning time of 1:17.92.
Bankes touched the wall ahead of the field in the 50-meter freestyle (27.63) and went on to win the 100-meter free (1:00.70).
The Providence College men’s and women’s teams will return to the pool on Nov. 19-21 as part of the Harold Anderson Invitational in Kingston, R.I.
