RACE VIDEO: Cesar Cielo Wins 100 Free, Santana Sets Junior WR in Finals of Maria Lenk

The above video is from the men’s 100 freestyle final at the 2014 Maria Lenk Trophy in Sao Paulo, Brazil. In that race, Cesar Cielo in lane 6 won in 48.13; Matheus Santana took 2nd in a new Junior World Record out of lane 5 in 48.61; and Joao de Lucca was 3rd from lane 2 in 48.67. (Lane 1 is at the bottom, lane 8 is at the top).

Santana was hugging the lane rope very hard, especially coming home, and may have even bumped it a few times coming home. There’s some things that Santana can do to get better, and with 11-months still as an 18-year old, he could have even better records in store.

See the full final day recap here.

Thanks to Swim It Up! for sharing the above video.

That 46.91 has a huge asterisk next to it since it was in the most advanced super suit ever used. Cielo said it took .5 off per 50 so the real time would have been around 47.9 and that was in prime shape

If Santana starts improve and he stops hugging the lyne and cycling (going from the right, returning from the left, he can go after Mcevoy time by pan Pacs

Not to Bash Cielo, but i dont understand how you can go 21.3 in the 50 but just cant even break 48.

There a lot of swimmers that can break 48 but can’t go 21.3. There two totally different events that require different training.

Magnussen has swam 47.1 but has only gone 21.5
Adrian has gone 47.5 and has gone 21.4 high.

It’s a tough thing to balance those two events.

I understand that but he is the world record holder in the 100m free with 46.91, and he has gone 47.9 at the olympics (went 21.54 in the 50 free) and was 47.84 at the pan american games ( went 21.58 in the 50 free)..So i just figured he would have been under 48 with ease since going 21.3

Cielo just returned to 100 free after almost 2 year off.. Since London and his surgery.. I think he is still adaptating himself to that.. but I think he can still break 48 again by Pan Pacs, even on relay..

Grab a stop watch and click it twice to get .14 on it. That’s how much time we are talking about, he’s not that far off.. Could have been any number of things he didn’t do as well as he had hoped to go 47, the video doesn’t divulge everything that went on in that race. I think the return to the race and off of surgery has far more to do than “balancing” the two races..

And don’t forget, the 100 WR was in a rubber suit. Makes it a lot easier for a 50 guy to hang on at the end of a 100.

They are completely different events. The 50 is completely anaerobic while the 100 is half anaerobic AND half aerobic.
