We saw the prelims of the men’s 100m breaststroke in the water this morning to kick off the 2024 Olympic Games.
That meant 25-year-old Qin Haiyang of China took to the La Défense Arena pool seeking to carry his momentum from winning this event both at the 2023 World Championships and the Asian Games.
Qin cruised to the 9th seed out of the heats, putting up a time of 59.58 to settle in among the crowd. That’s a casual performance from the man who owns a lifetime best of 57.69 as the 2nd-best performer in history.
Qin isn’t diving in without controversy, however, as he is one of the 11 swimmers named to the Chinese Olympic roster who reportedly tested positive for the banned substance TMZ early in 2021, ahead of that year’s postponed Olympic Games.
We reported how 200m breast competitor Zac Stubblety-Cook of Australia is considering a possible podium protest should both he and Qin land among the top 3 in that event.
His stance remains even though Chinese swimmers have already been drug tested almost 200 times in total after just their first 10 days in Paris.
According to Qin, who has been tested an average of 5-7 timers per day, “This proves that the European and American teams feel threatened by the performances of the Chinese team in recent years.
“Some tricks aim to disrupt our preparation rhythm and destroy our psychological defense. But we are not afraid.
“When you have a clear conscience, you do not fear slander. The team is currently preparing at the established pace. My teammates and I will resist the pressure and win more medals to silence the skeptics,” reported The Guardian.
He continued, “The tests come early in the morning before we’re even awake, during midday rest periods, forcing us to rest on hotel lobby sofas, and even late at night, keeping us up past midnight.” (The Guardian)
We’ll see how Qin’s performances unfold as he aims for 5 medals here in Paris.
It’s well documented totalitarian countries like China use sport as a metric to show how their system is superior. Of course they dope their athletes to win Olympic glory.
you must be living in caves. Today does China need to resort to sport performance to showcase or flaunt their superiority? Are you still living in the 70s or early 80s? If indeed doping was intentionally used, it’s certainly not because of your alleged reason. For such matters, one should only believe in evidence and official investigation reports.
Sounds like your biased opinion. Where’s the evidence of systemic doping? The US has had numerous incidents of contamination as well which WADA has kept under wraps up till now.
Martinenghi’s 59.03 won’t even make 7th place in the final from tokyo 2020
I’m positive Qin Haiyang would’ve sub-58 if they didn’t do this
if muricans or ozzies had been tested 200 times over 10 days, they wouldn’t have any competitors left.
“muricans” constantly does this. Don’t like competition and need to stir up drama.
Unless there’s proof, they should keep it to themselves instead of playing dirty.
Literally took some contamination cases that have already been cleared. And gave it a lot of hype. Media isn’t doing it any justice by helping muricans constantly play it up.
Only those using PEDs would say that. He’s already had a positive test.
Is that way team USA, who has the most athletes who dope is projecting to everyone else?
Arguably Arianne can now be considered along side Katie as the two best female Olympic swimmers ever …
Could anyone explain how exactly the performance-enhancing drugs work? I’m a newby nursing student and could not understand how pills taken days/weeks ago could still impose any impact from a pharmacodynamic point of view?
In theory, doping during training blocks allows you to train harder and recover quicker between hard sessions. This means that you’ll be faster at the big meet of the year, even though you aren’t doping at the big meet.
Was that what the Americans used to do? They’ve been underperforming massively.
Read WADA articles lol. Those athletes all get tested frequently during training season.
If they took an illegal substance, it should show up in big enough quantities. Which shows they are trying to build muscles or train harder.
Problem is none of those swimmers were even caught doping and was dismissed as likely contamination.
Stupid Australians always with stick up their bums
Lots of Chinese hate in the comments
Pretty sure the tone would be different if it were happening to another team…
No other team had a huge doping scandal at the last Olympics. If the USA or any other country had a scandal like China did at the last Olympics I would 100% support the extra testing.
Lots of US athlete dope ! But who controls the tests? US! Of course certain things get sweep under the rugs!
