Purdue Receives Verbal Commitment From Distance Freestyler Emily Meckstroth

Indiana native Emily Meckstroth has verbally committed to swim for Purdue University starting in the fall of 2015. Meckstroth is a distance freestyler that swims for the newly formed Michiana Stars Swim Team and Penn High School. With best times of 4:52.02 in the 500 freestyle and 16:43.32 in the 1650 freestyle, she will be a valuable addition to their distance squad.

Her junior year of high school was a breakout year for her, dropping more than ten seconds in her 500 freestyle from 5:03 to 4:52.02. The 200 freestyle was another strong event for her. After being stuck at 1:53 for two years, she was able to drop two seconds during her junior year down to a 1:51.79. The pattern continued into her 1000 freestyle, where she dropped 17 seconds to a best time of 9:59.84.

“I am so excited to announce that I have committed to Purdue University!”

“Purdue felt like a perfect fit, both athletically and academically. Purdue University has an incredible distance freestyle program and will, also, offer me a great education. The University’s strong and challenging academic reputation, known world-wide, was a significant factor in my decision. After my official visit, I immediately felt like I was already part of the Boilermaker family.  I can’t wait to be a member of the Purdue Women’s Swim Program next fall.”
“I am grateful to my family, teammates, and coaches for their support during the past 12 years of my swimming career.  I appreciate my teammates and club coach from Michiana Stars, Mike Anderson and my high school coach, Jess Preston for helping me reach my goal of swimming in the Big 10.”

It will be interesting to track her progress through her senior year and into her college career. If she continues to make drops like she has over the last year, she has the potential to be a big contributor for the Boilermakers.
