Former Michigan butterflier Davis Tarwater has spent the last year training with SwimMAC Carolina. While in Charlotte, maybe he did a bit of stumping for the Michigan men’s program, as now SwimMAC is sending a butterflier back north, in the form of Peter Brumm, who collegeswimming.com ranks as the #38 recruit in the class of 2012.
This verbal was first announced by former SwimMAC, and current Carmel Swim Club, coach Preston Parrish on Twitter on Sunday.
This is Mike Bottom’s second big butterfly signing of the season (it will take a team effort to replace the graduation of Dan Madwed), and Ann Arbor has become a bit of a destination for the ‘fliers. Also on campus currently is National High School Record holder Sean Fletcher, and soon will be the #7 recruit in the class Dylan Bosch out of South Africa.
As for Brumm, he’s got yards bests of 48.93 and 1:48.16 (and Olympic Trials cuts in both). He’ll also be a strong part of the Michigan 200 free tradition, with a best of 1:37.72. As a freshman, he’ll add some good depth to the Michigan program, but he has all the tools to develop into a Dan-Madwed-like sort of swimmer.
As for the women’s side (which is administered separately by coach Jim Richardson), they have brought in a very good Canadian swimmer Marni Oldershaw out of the Oakville in Ontario. She is an excellent middle-distance freestyler, who in 2009 broke the Canadian National Age Group Record in the 13-14 400 free. Her best in that event is now a 4:22.86 in LCM (4:50 in yards).
Lately, Oldershaw has developed into a great IM’er as well, with a LCM best of 4:49.65 in the 400 IM. That converts to about a 4:10 in yards, which would have put her on the cusp of scoring points at NCAA”s. She will try and replace Mattie Kukors (of the famous Kukors family), who transferred to Arizona State prior to this season, and the Michigan women will need her to be very good, very fast if they want to get back to contention in the Big Ten Conference.
