Penny Oleksiak Takes Down Noemie Thomas’ Age Group Record In 100 Fly

Penny Oleksiak took home a fifth place finish in the 100m fly tonight en route to breaking Noemie Thomas’ Canadian record that she set back in August of 2010.

The Toronto Swim Club swimmer has been on a slaughtering-spree of freestyle Canadian records this year, trading them back and forth with Rebecca Smith and Taylor Ruck.  Tonight she took a step back from the free and broke one in the 100m fly.

To start off the day Oleksiak had a very strong performance in the 100 fly prelims, sporting a time of 1:00.99 to make a 0.76 second drop from her seed time and head into the final as the eighth seed.

Tonight, she went even faster, taking another 0.96 seconds off her time to set a new Canadian record in the 13-14 age group with a 1:00.03. That time bettered Thomas’ 1:00.20 record.

The time now ranks Oleksiak as the 11th fastest Canadian ever in the 100m fly.

Coincidentally, Thomas was in the race with Oleksiak and ended up taking home a national title with a time of 58.17.
