Penn State Swim & Dive Announces 2022-23 Award Recipients

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – At the conclusion of the 2022-23 season, Penn State swimming & diving held its team awards banquet.

Below are the team awards and their descriptions and recipients.

L.D. MacNeill Award & Elizabeth McCoy Most Outstanding Athlete Award:

Presented to the swimmer or swimmers for consistently outstanding performances contributing the most to the team’s success. The award is named in honor of Lou MacNeil, head coach of the men’s swimming and diving team at Penn State for 18 years, and for Elizabeth McCoy, a long-time friend of Penn State University and the swimming family. The award is voted on by teammates.

Women’s Recipients: Emma Harvey and Daphne Wils
Men’s Recipient: Victor Baganha

Jerome Weinstein Award:

The Weinstein Coaches’ Award is named in honor of Jerome (Jerry) Weinstein, class of 1936 and a member of Penn State’s first swim team. His love for the sport touched every aspect of the Penn State aquatic program. A man of integrity, honesty, conviction and impeccable character, he influenced the lives of many people and the award serves as a lasting tribute to him and all the good he brought to Penn State swimming. It is presented to the team member who not only works the hardest, but also the person who always gives 100% to their teammates emotionally and physically, through the joyous times and the struggles.

Women’s Recipient: Ellie Tiskus
Men’s Recipient: William Lulek

1855 Award:

In 1855, Penn State was chartered by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as one of the nation’s first colleges of agricultural science. In the 1660 years that have passed, Penn State has undergone a period of tremendous growth and transformation to become one of the nation’s finest public universities. In a similar way, the 1855 Award is given to the swimmers who have experience the most improvement over the course of their career; a period of personal growth and transformation that mirrors that of Penn State’s since 1855.

Women’s Recipient: Casey Loughlin
Men’s Recipient: Calvin Wise

Nittany Lion Award:

Given to the team member whose perseverance in practice and effort in competition have led to the greatest overall improvement in performance during a season.

Women’s Recipients: Abby Henderson and Mary Brinker
Men’s Recipient: Andrew Christensen

Ellen Perry & Robert Krimmel Academic Achievement Award:

Presented to the student athlete that has attained the highest level of academic excellence through the season, based on a minimum of two semesters of class work at Penn State.

Women’s Recipient: Molly Carson
Men’s Recipient: Ben Doyle

Robert E. Galbraith Award:

Presented in memory of Robert E. Galbraith, Penn State’s swimming & diving coach from 1936-44, for outstanding contributions through performance, loyalty, spirit and leadership by a Penn State diver.

Recipient: Kevin Sullivan

Iron Lion Award:

Presented annually to one female and one male student-athlete who have demonstrated dedication, leadership and development in strength and conditioning.

Women’s Recipient: Wei Wei
Men’s Recipient: Tommy Hurley

Ernest B. McCoy Award:

Presented annually to one senior female and one senior male student-athlete who have combines successful athletic participation with academic excellence. The award is named for the longtime dean of Penn State’s College of Physical education, who also served as the university’s athletic director.

Women’s Recipient: Emma Harvey
Men’s Recipient: Lachlan Byrne

saw penn state announces and just assumed it would be a retirement post, guess i’m a little too excited at watching the carousel this year.
