Owen McDonald and Jordan Rzepka Win Men’s Big Ten Championship Individual Honors

2025 MEN’S BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIPS

Indiana junior Owen McDonald was named the Swimmer of the Championships at the conclusion of the 2025 Men’s Big Ten Swimming and Diving Championships. It’s McDonald’s first year in the conference after transferring from Arizona State.

McDonald was the only swimmer to sweep his individual events at the championship. He kicked off his individual slate with the 200 IM, setting a championship record of 1:39.89 and winning his first conference crown. His time ranks second in the NCAA this season.

The next day, McDonald took on the 100 backstroke. He was the only swimmer to break 45 seconds in the final, speeding to the win in 44.38. McDonald was just seven-hundredths from the championship record in the 100 backstroke; he cleared the mark in the 200 backstroke, setting not only a championship record but a Big Ten record of 1:37.15. With the swim, he surpassed Tyler Clary’s record of 1:37.58, which had stood since 2009.

McDonald also swam on four of the Hoosiers’ relays, helping the team to first-place finishes in the 400 freestyle and 400 medley relays. He led off both relays; in the former, he clocked a lifetime best of 41.62 as he, Mikkel Lee, Dylan Smiley, and Matt King set a conference record of 2:45.62. In the 400 medley relay, he, Finn Brooks, Tomer Frankel, and King established a new championship record of 2:59.87.

McDonald also split 1:31.92 on the 800 freestyle relay and 18.81 on the 200 freestyle relay, both of which finished fourth.

Purdue senior Jordan Rzepka earned Diver of the Championship honors. He closed out his Big Ten Championship career by striking gold on the platform, earning the first conference title of his career. He performed 90-point dives in the final two rounds of the platform ‘A’ flight to secure his title with 464.05 points.

Rzepka finished top five on the two other diving apparatuses, placing 3rd on the 3-meter and 5th on the 1-meter board. It’s the second year in a row that he’s finished top five in all three events at the Big Ten Championships.

He’s earned six medals over his Big Ten Championships career and is the first Boilermaker to win Big Ten Diver of the Championships since Emily Bretscher in 2020. He is the first male Purdue diver to win the award since his head coach David Boudia won in 2011.
