Former USC swimmer and 2012 German Olympian Dimitri Colupaev has paired with actor Danny Trejo, among others, to deliver meals to frontline health workers in Los Angeles.
Trejo, known for rolls in films like Heat, Con Air, and Despearado among a long list of credits, owns a restaurant in Los Angeles called Trejo’s Tacos. He, along with several other local restaurateurs, have teamed up with Colupaev to make use of the swimmer’s “smart kitchen” space in L.A. called Colony Cooks.
Similar to a co-working space for restaurants, Colony Cooks offers off-site kitchen spaces when restaurants need to prepare takeout or large catering orders.
In partnership with celebrity chef José Andrés’ nonprofit World Central Kitchen and a local fundraising group started by motivated moms, the group is working to feed health care workers at local hospitals that are working long hours in uncomfortable conditions to care for coronavirus patients.
Trejo, Colupaev, and other restaurant owners are preparing 500 meals per day. Currently serving workers at USC Verdugo Hills Hospital, the group has also worked at Providence Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica.
Trejo posted a 10-minute video of the setup on his Instagram channel, which you can see below.
