EVANSTON, Ill. – The University of Miami swimming team traveled to host Northwestern for a tri-meet with Southern Illinois Saturday at the Norris Aquatics Center.

Head coach Andy Kershaw was impressed with his team’s effort and performance over the course of the meet, which saw the Hurricanes split the dual matchups with the Wildcats and Salukis.

“I’m really proud of the team. I’m proud of the energy they had and the way they stuck together and the way they swam their races,” Kershaw said. “We are really in a good spot…probably the best spot we’ve been in at this point in October heading into some different phases of training and getting ready for our midseason invitational.”

Among Miami’s top performers on the day was Talia Bates, who moved into eighth all-time in school history in the 100-yard butterfly (53.97).

MK Kelley moved into sixth place in the 200-yard backstroke (1:58.79), up from her previous mark of eighth.

In addition, freshman Amanda Witkus now ranks sixth in program history the 200-yard butterfly (2:00.94).

“I told the team afterwards we should have a ton of confidence going forward because we’re in a great place and have done a lot of hard work to set ourselves up for success going forward,” Kershaw said. “I’m very excited.”

Emma Shuppert won the 100-yard backstroke (53.30), while Bates (22.75) and Jacey Hinton (23.12) took two of the top three spots in the 50-yard freestyle. Bates (49.30, second) and Hinton (50.30) managed the same feat in the 100-yard freestyle, taking second and third.

Giulia Carvalho was second in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:15.78), while Adrianna Cera (4:55.53) and Aino Otava (4:56.49) took two of the top three finishes in the 500-yard freestyle.

“We were good from top to bottom today. Some people that got a chance to shine that don’t always get that chance. That was really cool to see,” Kershaw said. “I really think this team is set up for success as we move forward.”

The Hurricanes host FAU on Fri., Nov. 3 at the Whitten Center Pool. The action is set to begin at 3 p.m.

Evanston, Ill. — The Southern Illinois swimming and diving team competed strongly against Power Five opponents Northwestern and Miami (FL) on Saturday. However, both the men’s and women’s teams came up short in Evanston.

“It was very exciting to have the opportunity to race two top-level teams on Saturday. While we didn’t have the depth to pull out the dual meet wins, we had countless phenomenal performances. Olivia Herron and Celia Pulido both posting NCAA “B” standards and top 25 times individually, two men’s relays posting top 20 times nationally” head coach Geoff Hanson said.

Olivia Herron once again had a first place finish in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:12.19 putting her in the NCAA “B” standard. Celia Pulido  competed strongly for the women as well in her events, especially the 100 backstroke where she finished second with a time of 53.76 putting her in the NCAA “B” group as well. Both Herron and Pulido are currently holding the school records for the 200 breaststroke and 100 backstroke. Their times this weekend set new top ten times in those events for Southern Illinois.

On the men’s side Alex Santiago Alex Cimera Nicolas Lanuza  and Donat Csuvarszki  were once again victorious in the men’s 200 medley relay. They finished first with a time of 1:27.67. Donat Csuvarszki also finished first in the men’s 50 freestyle with a time of 20.20.

“Six total event wins and numerous lifetime bests show us that we are right on track to accomplish our team goals for the fall semester” said Hanson.
