Coaches, Swimmers, Colleagues and Friends,

As many of you know, May is National Water Safety Month.  In light of recent events surrounding our organization, we are declaring Sunday, May 31, 2015 National Shallow Water Blackout Prevention Day.

“To remember those lost to SWB and to raise awareness of the dangers of prolonged underwater breath-holding leading to SWB.”

In the last few weeks we have seen great strides being taken to educate the public at large about the dangers of prolonged underwater breath-holding and SWB.

Vermont’s Governor, Peter Shumlin, declared June “Shallow Water Blackout Awareness Month” in the state of Vermont, in honor of Benjamin Haller. (For more information in the event please see http://www.wcax.com/story/29117956/vt-dedicates-month-to-shallow-water-blackout-awareness and also http://goo.gl/IKdqz0 )

The CDC has issued a warning about deaths related to underwater breath-holding activities.

Please help us raise awareness and save lives by forwarding this message to friends and colleagues, promoting National Shallow Water Blackout Prevention Day via social media, blogging, and sending out information using the hashtags #SWBPrevention and or #SWBPDay5/31.

With gratitude,

Rhonda Milner, M.D.
