Mustangs Trample Competition at North Texas Relays

The North Texas Mean Green hosted their annual “North Texas Relays” meet last night. In attendance on the women’s side were the Mean Green, University of Houston Cougars, the Southern Methodist University Mustangs, as well as the University of Arkansas- Little Rock Trojans.

The Mustangs  took a commanding lead in the first event, taking the top two spots in the Women’s 300y Butterfly relay. The A team, which consisted of freshman Adri Santa,  junior Tiffany Sudarma, and Sophomore Marne Erasmus touched in 2:50.81- almost 5 seconds faster than the next place finisher. In fact, the Mustangs were first in eight of the ten swimming events that were contested at the meet.

The Mean Green  took back to back win’s  in the only two events not won by SMU:  the 300y Backstroke and 300y Breaststroke relays, touching the wall in 2:52.82 and  3:18.97, respectively. The Mean Green relied heavily on new-comers to the team for these two victories. Although the Cougar’s had no event wins, their eight top-3 finishes were enough to earn them third place in the competition. The Trojans rounded out the meet, taking 4th.

North Texas, which only has a women’s program, opened the meet up to two men’s teams as well: SMU and Oklahoma Baptist University. The Mustang men had event wins in seven of the ten events that were swum against the Bison’s. There were several new comers to the SMU squad that contributed to event wins, including:  Brandon Norman, Charlie Wort, Carson Klein, Aaron Schlemovitz, John Lindros and Lucas Schenke. The Bison had convincing wins in the 300y Breaststroke (2:57.13), 400y Medley (3:30.03) and the 4×100 IM (3:35.93).

Full Meet results here.

The Mean Green return to competition next Saturday when they host Incarnate Word and Liberty in a double-dual meet. The Trojans will also be host to a double-dual meet when St. Louis and Henderson State take the trip down to Little Rock. Next up for the Lady Mustangs is the SMU Classic from 10/16-10/17. The men return to competition in a dual meet against local rival TCU on 10/18. The Cougars will have their intrasquad meet on the 16th and the Bison will return to competition on the 16th against West  Chester.
