EMMITSBURG, Md. (November 4, 2023) – By a margin of .33 seconds between first and second in the final relay, Mount St. Mary’s swimming & diving earned a sweep of the VMI Keydets Saturday at the ARCC Swimming Pool. The men’s team took home a 151-142 victory, while the women had the victory in hand by the final race to earn a 179.5-108.5 final.
Nicholas Santorelli ran the final leg for the 200 Meter Freestyle Relay, edging VMI’s top squad with a collective team time of 1:35.55 to 1:35.88. Austin Toland, Lucas Hancock, and Antonio Gurri set the pace to set up a down-to-the-wire finish.
Of the 32 events contested, the Mountaineers emerged as the winners in 22 of them. The men’s team set seven new records, six for metered events in the pool and Tim Bonner with a 178.85 score during a round of 1-meter dives. The women’s 200 yard medley relay team of Hanna Aggen, Christina Lazari, Abby Steckiel, and Maddy Samuels came within .02 seconds of a new record at 2:01.35.
Before the start of the meet, the Mount honored 14 members of the 2024 Senior Class.
Records improved to 3-1 on the men’s side and 2-2 on the women’s side. Next up for the team is the Franklin & Marshall Invitational, held in Lancaster, Pa. November 17-19.

EMMITSBURG, Md. – The VMI men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams performed well Saturday at Mount St. Mary’s University, but fell 151-142 in the men’s meet and 179.5-108.5 in the women’s.
Top men’s performances:
*Ethan Griffith won the 200 IM in 2:11.89, with Elijah Fields in second in 2:13.77
*Fields won the 100 fly in 58.10 and Pedro Robertson won the 800 free in 9:02.51
*The Keydets’ Matt Picard (53.41), Chino Vera (53.53) and Dalton Cosner (54.20) finished 1-2-3 in the 100 free
*Lane Jones earned first place in the two 1M diving events
*Fields placed second in the 200 fly in 2:13.43 and Griffith was second in the 200 breast in 2:22.64
*Sam Castle was second in the 200 free (1:58.46) and 200 back (2:14.08)
*Tinn Nguyen took second in the 100 back in 1:00.96 while Collin Marks and Robertson swam identical times of 4:23.94 to tie for second in the 400 free
*Chase Lane finished third in the 100 breast in 1:06.25
*The 200 free relay team of Picard, Vera, Castle and Cosner placed second in 1:35.88
*Vera, Lane, Max Brunner and Marks finished third in the 200 medley relay in 1:47.68
*Ryder Creal took third in both 1M contests to help the VMI men divers outscore MSM 24-8
Top Women’s Performances:
*Anna Grace Adams (10:07.29), Valerie Tonnu (10:14.77) and Sarah Liebenow (10:19.66) finished 1-2-3 in the 800 free
*Rachel Greathouse won the 400 free in 4:50.14 and placed second in the 200 free (2:15.28) and the 200 fly (2:36.74)
*Ella Davenport’s two first place finishes in the 1M competitions allowed VMI to outscore the Mountaineers’ women divers 18-8
*Jillian Maher placed second in the 50 free (29.50) and third in the 100 fly
*Anne Bowles was second in the 100 breast in 1:18.07 and Noelle Tong was third in the 100 back in 1:09.98
*Walden Wilder was third in the 200 breast and 200 IM and Carter Wasser was fourth in the 200 back
*Tong, Greathouse, Maher and Kate Taylor swam a 1:55.88 in the 200 free relay to place third
*Tong, Wilder, Maher and Taylor placed fourth in the 200 medley relay in 2:09.29

The Keydets return home Saturday to the VMI Aquatics Center at 11:30 a.m. to face four teams: NJIT, Howard, UNC Asheville and UMBC.
