After the first stop of the 2014 Arena Grand Prix Series, Americans Elizabeth Beisel and Tyler Clary are the two biggest money winners – not surprisingly, both IM’ers with the versatility to earn top three finishes across a wide range of events.
Beisel has earned $4,300 thanks to wins in the 500 free, 1650 free, and 400 IM, plus several other second-and-third place finishes. Clary for his part won the 400 IM, the 200 fly, and the 200 backstroke.
Note that USA Swimming has confirmed that the women’s 1650 free was a money and points event, even though specific Grand Prix rules declare that the 1000 free is the Olympic equivalent for yards meets. There was no 1000 free in Minneapolis, given that the meet is in part geared toward college athletes looking for NCAA cuts, so USA Swimming just pushed that money to the women’s 1650 free instead.
Note: Swimmers who, based on best available information, are still amateurs are marked with an “(A)” below. While there are loopholes allowing athletes to accept some prize money to cover expenses in the NCAA guide-book, they’re too complex to look at on a case-by-case basis, so we’ve focused on earned money versus received money.
