Milwaukee Puts On Dominant Showing At Wisconsin Showcase

BROWN DEER, WIS.- The Milwaukee women’s swimming and diving team opened its season at the Wisconsin Showcase Saturday afternoon.

The Panthers dominated the leaderboard, winning 14 of the 16 events held while also taking the top three spots in six of them.

Milwaukee got first place finishes from Janelle SchulzChristiana BrooksErika ThomasMara FreemanSkylar RugglesGabrielle LePineMaddi HayashiJulie Rebek and Elli Moss. The 200 freestyle (1:36.65) and 200 medley relay (1:46.27) teams took home wins as well.

The Panthers had four swimmers win in their debut for the Black and Gold. Gabrielle LePine won both the 100 (1:04.05) and 200 (2:25.19) breaststroke. Freshman Maddi Hayashi took home multiple first-places as well, claiming the 100 (58.12) and 200 (2:09.10) butterfly in her colligate debut. Also in her first college meet, Christiana Brooks finished with the win in the 100 freestyle with a time of 52.97. Elli Moss was the last Panther newcomer to take first-place, finishing the 200 individual medley in 2:11.70.

Erika Thomas won two events of her own, taking the 200 freestyle and 400 individual medley with times of 1:54.35 and 4:37.39 respectively. Janelle Schulz took first in the 50 freestyle (23.99), while Skylar Ruggles touched the wall first in the 200 backstroke (2:06.22).

On the diving board Julie Rebek got the win the 1m dive with a score of 258.45.

“It’s always fun to see and race our friends from across the state” said head coach Kyle Clements. “It’s too early in the season for all of us to judge where we will be in February, but this meet gives us a glimpse of where we are now. For us there is a lot of work to be down but the initial times of been thrown down, and now we have to build upon them.”

The Panthers will be back Saturday, Oct. 26 at 11:00 a.m. when they host IU Indianapolis for the first dual meet of the season at Klotsche Natatorium.
