Mikayla Tan Breaks Girls’ 11-12 National Age Group Record In 100 Breast – 1:02.61

DART Swimming’s Mikayla Tan set a new standard for the 11-12 girls on Friday morning at the West edition of the Winter Junior Championships in Austin, breaking the National Age Group Record in the 100 breaststroke.

Tan swam to a time of 1:02.61 to break the girls’ 11-12 NAG record of 1:02.63, set by Leah Hayes in March of 2018.

Tan’s previous best time stood at 1:03.35, set this past May, which ranked her sixth in age group history. At the same competition, Tan broke the 11-12 NAG record in the 200 breast in a time of 2:15.38.

When she set her previous best time, Tan also clocked 1:12.75 in the 100 breast in long course meters, which at the time was the fastest for an 11-12 girl in U.S. history since 1998. She followed up by going 1:11.98 at the Speedo Junior National Championships in August, maintaining her place as #3 in age group history.

Despite competing against swimmers up to six years her elder, Tan earned a second swim on Friday with her record-setting effort, finishing tied for 23rd to claim a lane in tonight’s bonus final, where she’ll be the youngest swimmer in the field by three years.

On Thursday, Tan set a personal best time of 2:03.63 in the 200 IM, which ranks her third all-time in the 11-12 age group and is just four-tenths shy of the NAG record held by Claire Tuggle (2:03.23).

Congrats. Side note: #9 all time performer was from the Woodland (not Woodlands) Swim Team in CA. Jody had the national record at the time and Woodland is only about 10 miles from Davis. Crazy she’s still #9 all time!
