Danish teen swimming star Mie Nielsen has been nominated for an award for the Biggest Sports Performance of the Year in her native Denmark by the sports editors at tv2.dk.
Nielsen, one of 10 nominees, was selected thanks to her gold medal in the 100 back at the Danish-hosted European Short Course Championships.
In that race, Nielsen took Denmark’s only individual gold, which was a remarkable comeback after missing most of the long course season with a knee injury. She was also a key part of the Danish 200 free relay that also won the European title.
In addition to that swim, which was a European Record, Nielsen also set Danish Records in the 200 free (1:55.07 – SCM) and the 50 back (26.68 – SCM) over 6 weeks of impressive swimming.
As of posting, Nielsen sat tied for 2nd in the voting. She was well behind legendary driver Tom Krisensen, who won his 9th Le Mans victory (a 24-hour auto race), and tied with Kevin Magnussen, another race car driver. The gap was about 650 votes (out of 5,000 cast to that point).
I would think that Lotte Friis’ performance this year far exceeds Mie Nielsen’s.
