The Sacramento Pro Swim saw Michael Andrew tie for 1st in the 50 free and place 2nd in the 50 breast, 100 breast, and 50 fly. The new member of the ASU pro group is still adjusting to training in Tempe, noting that he’s not used to “racing tired” but excited about what that could mean for his top-end speed at the end of the season.
I totally get this reaction in the comments.
But the key is that Michael has to believe in the change in training as much as the people who changed it do.
I hope he finds what he’s looking for and we all suspect we see possible.
Just once, I’d love to see one of these diverse stroke, super sprinters muscle up and focus on the 200IM.
I think the closest we’ve gotten has been Natalie Coughlin and Kate Douglas.
It may be too late for Dressel, but maybe not for Andrew.
“I’m not used to racing tired.”
Just wow. Everyone assumed this of course, but to hear it out loud and admitted is still shocking. No wonder this dude plateaued and regressed for years. No aerobic challenge, no volume, no stimulus-adaptation-recovery-performance cycle. Literally everyone (except Peter Andrew?) knows this isn’t up for debate. This is required.
Hopefully this move to Tempe will fix this. He’s a great talent and only 24.
Disney needs to make a ‘What If…” similar to the Marvel one forecasting how careers would’ve wound up had certain things worked out differently.
Trying weed during a break from training, post Olympics, is not a drug problem 🤦🏽♂️
He had two DUIs, though. Alcohol is a (legal) drug.
He has openly stated he’s had problems with drinking alcohol.
He’s had an objectively successful career. but with comments like this, i have to wonder if he actually had a lot more potential and his success was on the lower end of what he likely would go on to do.
Im not even saying, he needed to train the 8k+ the Sandpipers train early on. But, its hard to argue that he likely wouldnt have been better with a larger base.
Swimswam editors always winking with these MA article titles
The sober truth is he needs to improve a whole lot from where he was last year if he wants to make another national team. MA is of course aware of that himself, he made a big change, exactly what us coach commentators said he should do. I really fell that those still chiding him at this point are in poor taste
It is kinda strange to be celebrating a professional athlete his age finally lifting though xD, but I do have strong hopes for ASU MA
The seller of the century Michael Andrew is not going to start winning again until he finally decides to drop the 50 breast for the 200 IM at every meet!
Bring on the entertainment!
Alternate headline title: “I’m not used to training”
LOL
Why did he scratch 2im? I thought a month or so ago, he said he was all in on 2im! (I never believed he would do that)
All in just like Jerry Jones said the Cowboys were ‘All in’ last off season.
