In an ongoing story regarding the Mexican Swimming Federation having been temporarily suspended by FINA just days ago, a key figure within the nation’s federation has just announced his resignation.
Mexican Swimming Federation (FMN) President Kiril Todorov has resigned from his position as Vice Chairman of the FINA Technical Committee. In his letter of resignation to FINA President Julio Maglione, Todorov succinctly wrote the following:
“Dear Mr. Maglione, please accept this letter as my formal resignation as
vice president of the Technical Committee of the FINA swimming
as a matter of immediate notification.” (Inside the Games)
Per FINA, the Mexican Swimming Federations suspension was a result of the FMN “not fulfilling contractual obligations concerning the cancellation of the 2017 FINA World Championships in Guadalajara.”
FINA fined the Mexican Swimming Federation $5 million for withdrawing themselves from hosting duties, and all Mexican swimmers are currently banned from competing in FINA competition.
Earlier this week, Todorov responded to FINA’s fine by saying “[FINA] know that we cannot pay this amount. What do they gain from suspending us? Nothing. We cannot pay it. They are putting pressure on the Mexican government through Mexican athletes, this is what FINA is doing.”
FINA has not responded to three requests for comment on what the federation’s suspension means.
