Medeiros Top Performer At Brazilian Open and Senior Champs

After four days of competition in Porto Alegre at the Brazilian Senior Open National Championships Etiene Pieres Medeiros walked away as the top female performer at both the Senior and Open Championships.

Medeiros collected a total of 100 points in both competitions and also had the top performances in both sections of the championships posting a 28.15 in the 50 backstroke to win the Senior crown and then winning the same event in the Open championship recording a time of 28.11.

On the men’s side Nicholas Dos Santos was the top point getter in the Open competition with 84 while Leonardo de Deus took top spot in the Senior competition with 63 points.

Felipe Alves Franca had the top performance in both competitions putting up a 27.44 in the 50 breaststroke to win the Senior championship and then a 27.03 to win the Open championship in the same event.

Fiat/Minas took home the titles in both Senior/Daltely Guimaraes Trophy and the Open Championships:

Daltely Guimaraes Trophy final scores:

  1. Fiat/Minas – 466.50
  2. Pinheiros – 350.00
  3. Corinthians/Abdem – 311.00

Open final scores

  1. Fiat/Minas – 1,014.50
  2. Pinheiros – 813.00
  3. Corinthians/Abdem – 760.50

For the first time the overall team rankings for 2013 ended in a tie with Corintians and Pinheiros both collecting 355 points.

The final day of competition was supposed to provide the greatest excitement of the meet, as it was reported in the press before the competition that World Champion Cesar Cielo was in top form and ready to end the year with an impressive performance.

That did not come to be as Cielo lost to Bruno Fratus in the morning’s Senior competition with Fratus posting a 21.82 compared to Cielo’s 21.92. It was reported that Cielo was more than a little displeased with his performance, which was the reason he did not return for the rematch with Fratus in the evening’s Open event.

Fratus went on to win the Open event in a time of 21.80, finishing off what was a strong showing after his recovery from shoulder surgery.

After a poor performance in the morning Graciele Hermann posted a time of 25.02 to win the Open women’s 50 freestyle championship. Her time was under the Pan Pacific Championships qualifying standard and was just off Flavia Delaroli‘s 2009 Brazilian record of 24.98.

Felipe Franca Silva won the men’s 100 breaststroke in both competitions recording a time of 1:00.31 in the morning and 1:00.53 at night, both of which are under the Pan Pacific cut.

Considerations[2], female side:
-Four retirements:Tatiana Lemos, Rebeca Bretanha, Larissa Cieslak and Ivi Monteiro.
-Two PB for Hermann(25.02 and 55.04), close to dip into sub-25 and 54 category.
-Awekening of De Paula:after suit years, her fly times arent that good. Her 58.3 shows she is still the girl to beat in South America.

Some considerations about Open:
-Cielo must straight up his game.He should be swimming finals.Skiped just because he wasnt going to do a 21.20 is a bad sportmanship. In the morning, he had a bad RT(0.76-bad for his standards), but very good first half, but he glided at the end.A better RT and a correct finish would put him in that 21.6-21.7 range he wanted in the morning.
-Dos Santos made a PB in 100fly(53.06), aiming a slot in 4x100medley relay for 2016.He is now 33years-old, and would be great to be in top of his game at 36.I am a bit skeptical, but only time will tell.
-Matheus Santana is becoming a reality.Althought he was slower in finals… Read more »
