Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – The Malaysia Aquatics Federation is proud to announce the successful completion of the 1st Malaysia Short Course Swimming Championships held from July 4-7, 2024. This groundbreaking event, marking the first national-level short course meet in the country, witnessed an unprecedented 18 records being shattered, including 12 women’s records and 6 men’s records.
Among the highlights was the breaking of the oldest standing record from 1999, the Men’s 400 IM, previously held by Wan Aslan Wan Ali Abdullah.
Megan Oesting, Malaysia’s Swimming Technical Director, expressed her excitement about the event’s success: “I’m thrilled with how far we’ve come this year. Everyone was really happy to swim in the short pool and the energy on deck and in the stands was fantastic. Some of those records were broken 3-4 times in the same event by different people, one heat after another. I’ve never seen so many records go down; we’re having a lot of fun. This is an exciting time for Malaysian swimming, and this is only the beginning.”
National Head Coach, Eric Anderson, also shared his enthusiasm: “It was a fantastic weekend at the 1st Malaysia Short Course Nationals. Not only did we rewrite the record books, but we had five swimmers dip under the qualification standards for the World Short Course Championships in December. In addition to those two, we had five other swimmers swim within 1% of the cuts. It’s an exciting time for Malaysian swimming as we look forward to fielding our largest contingent of world level athletes in ages.”
The Malaysia Short Course Swimming Championships not only highlighted the growing talent in Malaysian swimming but also established a new standard with the official keeping and maintenance of short course national records.
