Verrado High School senior Makena Malkemus has verbally committed to West Virginia University for the fall of 2022.

Malkemus has Futures cuts in the 50, 100, and 200 freestyle, as well as the 100 and 200 backstroke. She swims club for the YMCA Westside Silver Fins, and she recently competed at the 2021 Western Region Speedo Sectionals. There, she placed in the top 30 in the 50- and 100-meter freestyle, and the 100-meter backstroke.
Her best short course times are:
- 50 freestyle: 23.76
- 100 freestyle: 51.72
- 100 backstroke: 57.94
- 200 freestyle: 1:52.15
- 200 backstroke: 2:02.48
West Virginia University is a member of the Big 12 conference. At the 2021 Big 12 Swimming Championships, the West Virginia women placed fourth out of five teams. With her best times, Malkemus would have placed in the top 25 in the 50, 100, and 200 freestyle and the 100 backstroke. She also would have placed in the top 15 in the 200 backstroke.
According to WVU’s 2020-21 statistics, Malkemus would have the fourth-fastest 50 and 200 freestyles on the team, the fourth-fastest 200 backstroke, and the sixth-fastest 100 freestyle.
