The Texas duo of Hobson and Hubert had one heck of a night in Federal Way. Luke Hobson, the 2x defending champion in the 200 free, made it three in a row, dropping a massive 1:28.33 to break his own NCAA record by half a second. Two events later, Hubi Kos won his 2nd event of the meet, cracking the 3-year-old NCAA record with a 43.20.
Seems to me that breaking an NCAA record is in and of itself an historic accomplishment. It’s a “best ever in the history of the sport” moment for the swimmer(s) beating the previous “best ever” performance!
I don’t think historic is the right word. Its unnecessarily dramatic.
The 2 free was Hobson’s own and the back was only a couple of years old.
There won’t be a consensus on the correct number but something like 10+ years for historic. Or breaking the record of a historically fast swim – like breaking CD’s 50 free.
